This year i don't care or know if the strikeout was a good stat in 1947.

A hitter that strikes out a lot is usually an undisciplined hitter, that is very important info.

Show me a hitter with a lot of strikeouts, and I'll show you a power hitter. You can tell an undisciplined hitter by looking at walks (or lack thereof).

Of the top ten guys all-time in strikeouts, four are Hall of Famers.

The most overrated is wins, which I compeltely disregard. I don't even look at it.

Funny enough, batting average is so overrated that it is becoming underrated. I love the slash stats (obviously). I think you can get no better picture of a player than by looking at AVG/OBP/SLG.

Errors are also tremendously overrated. They don't tell you squat. Errors are almost all judgment and require a guy to get to a ball so it lets players with crappy ranges off the hook.

an out is a fricking out dude. striking out = popping out. This whole "putting the ball into play" is moot unless something actually happens.

thats why some of the best fielders will make more errors because they are able to get to balls some other players cant get to. A great player might make a few wow plays that other players might just eat to avoid the error

And a player can advance to first if the catcher drops the third strike. So its a wash.

An out is an out.

Half the leaders in strikeouts are in the top 20 in walks and all but 2 of the twenty have at least 40 walks. So that statement is just not true.

Missing Adam Dunn just a little bit, are ya? lol

you have no argument against it. The strikeout is overrated. And you have no evidence that it isnt. period.

it's still an overrated stat on measuring if a hitter is good or not
no one has posted any evidence against this opinion.

But guys like Mariano Rivera are still very valuable.

saying saves is an over rated stat, which it is, is not saying relief pitchers are worthless. Never in sports history has a stat dictated strategy the way the save does. The closer, which is presumably the best RP on the team, will almost always come in at the start of a half inning when his team is up by 1,2 or 3 runs. Most pitchers should be able to get 3 outs before the other team scores enough runs to take the lead. There are often other situations in games where it would be more crucial to get outs, but teams will trott out some middle reliever because its not a save situation. The save has grossly distorted the way RP are used, vs how they should be used.

No, it's not.

Fundamental baseball: When you're on offense, putting the ball in play >>>>>>> Not putting the ball in play
