I'd go with RBIs since you have no control of the people in front of you getting on base.

A hitter that strikes out a lot is usually an undisciplined hitter, that is very important info.

Eh I don't agree with this statement...cleanup men probably have among the highest strike out rate on the team. Power hitters strike out a lot because they're swinging for the fences oftentimes. It's hit or miss with them. I wouldn't necessarily call them undisciplined.

I say saves. Who gives a frick if you come in with a 3 run lead and get one out?

People act like this happens all the time. Half of the time, the closer comes in to start the 9th with a 1-run lead.

okay...so half the time who gives a frick?

Half the time a pitcher wins a gem, 3-1, and half the time they win a blowout game like 10-6.

They're both overrated

It's overrated I'm not saying it isn't. But guys like Mariano Rivera are still very valuable.

True...but IMO not any more crucial than a top flight middle reliever. Closers get paid substantially more than the top middle relievers...their value, while may be at the most slightly more than a top middle reliever, doesn't justify their pay or prestige

Its the strikeout, especially for power hitters. If you want proof the average OPS of the top 20 strikeout leaders in MLB is .844, not too shabby.

Missing Adam Dunn just a little bit, are ya? lol

but you have control of knocking in the runs

the answer is wins, as said many of times

You can't knock them in if they're on the bench. Batting average with runner's in scoring position combined with RBIs would be a closer indicator than just RBIs.

of course the answer is wins by a pitcher. But what about all of these records that players are putting up now for things like most wins or hits or anything other records players are putting up in the postseason now. the postseason is much longer now than what it was back in the day

Jeriome Robertson won 15 games one season with an ERA over 5. He started eight games the next season and then was out of the league for good.

Just an example why wins as a stat can be meaningless.

I'm surprised it took 4 pages for someone to say this.

BA's not THE most overrated stat, but it's certainly overrated.

Wins and Saves for pitchers
Strikeouts and BA for hitters

And can we throw Kige off the board now? After starting a half way decent conversation he had to ruin it by saying OBP was overrated.
