Do they even exist anymore? You don't hear anything about them or see anything about them. They used to be big time programs and all over TV. Those two teams had to have the biggest drop off in the past 5 years. What's the cause? Is it because Boise State never joined a big conference? And is it because no more Chip Kelly? You don't see their crazy uniforms every week either.

Helfrich bombed out for Oregon but I think they made a great hire in Willie Taggart. Gonna need a few years there but he is a very good coach

Traditionally these aren't powerhouse programs. They each just had a decade or so of the spotlight and back to where they use to be

Hell, Boise was a FCS school not that long ago

This pretty much explains it.

Oregon was really in a bad spot once they got rid of Helfrich

I do like Taggart at Oregon. I'm not sure if he can get them back to the level they once were (considering they are sandwiched between Stanford, Washington, and Washington State), but he should be able to right the ship after the Helfrich disaster.

Boise State isn't necessarily terrible. It'll be difficult for them to maintain their level of success with Peterson at Washington and they're a non-Power 5 school.

Boise not getting into a major conference while the iron was hot has put the ceiling on them I’m affraid.

Coaching is everything, especially at non-traditional schools. Kelly and Petersen are borderline HOF coaches. Those don't just grow on trees.

BSU was never getting into a P5 conference. They don't offer anything academically or athletically besides football. Other teams that played their way into a P5--Louisville, TCU, Utah--at least have other noteworthy programs, good endowments, and/or rich boosters.

Oregon has a lot of tools for success. Moreso than virtually any other school, they can brand themselves a very "modern" program, with outlandish Nike unis and a high-tempo style of play that kids dig. Kelly was perfect for them in that respect.

Lots of good responses in this thread. For Oregon it was losing Chip. Add that in with Washington improved as well as Washington State and it makes it more difficult. Also, take into account that Stanford never fell off. As Oregon got worse, Stanford stayed consistent. This, in itself, makes it hard for Oregon to re-emerge. The PAC North is as solid as they come.

Oregon made a bad hire after Kelly left and Boise St just had a dynamic coach in Chris Peterson.

Boise hasn't dropped off that much. Petersen's run there would almost be impossible for anyone to replicate. They won another Fiesta Bowl 3 years ago and won 10 games last season. After a shaky start this year, they seem to be rolling again since beating San Diego State.

Yep and he put together a solid staff.

Oregon will make strides next year IMO.

What's funny is most talking heads were quick to say that all of Boise's success was because of Bryan Harsin. Which could have been slightly true. But damn, that program isn't as successful as it was while Peterson was there.

Losing Peterson and Kelly doesn’t help any program.

Boise is in fricking Idaho.

Oregon is rebuilding.

A school in the south should go after Taggart hard.
