The guy's name is "Wembanyama" which is kind of long.
Wemby is short for that.

And we've been doing it in the sports world forever. TJ Houshmandzadeh was rarely called by his last name. I heard TJ, Housh, and a few others. They even did a funny commercial about fantasy league drafts and no one knowing how to pronounce it.
Saltalamacchia was called Salt or Salty. Giannis is just called by his first name, since his last name is Antetokounmpo. Coach K is another where the spelling of his last name meant we shortened it. Dellavedova is commonly shortened to Delly.
