Was QB yardage ever calculated using just the completed yards in the air?

Rather than including YAC?

If a quarterback does a little designed dump pass and the guy takes it 80 yards the QB gets the yardage obviously, but that doesn’t really rely on the QBs arm to get that yardage. Just curious if they ever regularly tracked yards in the air as the main stat back in the day?

Does anyone keep up with passing yards without including yard after catch

I don’t really see what is so confusing.

I’d be interested to know what QB stats would look like without YAC. Obviously a long pass is not the only measure of a QB and a dump pass can be the best option for a particular play, but would be interested to know.

You can look at Yards Per Attempt and get an idea of how they play. I’m sure the analytics track air yards too.

they should do it that way, only the receiver should get YAC yards, thats all on the receiver so why does the QB get credit for the receivers yardage after the catch

Qb could put the ball in a spot that leads the WR into open field

We can call it "The Brady", and Tom will come in toward the bottom of these rankings.

Qb could also hand the ball to the RB who goes for a 90 yard touchdown but the QB rightfully doesnt get those yards just like he doesnt deserve the yards after catch

That wouldn’t take into account ball placement or maybe a QB checking down after all the downfield receivers were covered up, so it’s not entirely about yardage in the air, but it would be fun to see how different QBs stack up.

I feel like PFF probably has some sort of advanced stats that can accurately show “actual air yards” or something like that.
