Was 2014 the last year we had true parity in college football?

I feel like that first year of the CFP was probably its best and most electric. You had some twists and turns the likes of which no one expected, the NY6 games were fairly entertaining and still seemed to mean something, and the Pac-12 was not only relevant, but had a team that was good enough to win a national championship. When's the last time we can say that? Probably 2014. It also was the last time a team from the SEC didn't make the national title game.

Since that time I feel like it's basically become an invitational for Clemson, Ohio State, the SEC, and the occasional appearance by Oklahoma when they want to get their arse kicked.

The Clemson’s of the world have earned their keep in my view. Although they continually play a junk schedule, they’ve proven they can hang with you guys.

ND, OU unfortunately always end up taking a spot from someone far more accomplished. I’m a believer in an 8 team playoff FWIW as it would (most likely) flush out the frauds.

Alabama and OSU were still both in the CFP. FSU was too as the defending champs from 2013. If by parity you mean only 2 instead 3 of the 4 usual suspects being there, then sure. Every other year, 3 of OSU/Alabama/Clemson/Oklahoma have been in the CFP. It may have presented more parity, but what really happened is Clemson simply replaced FSU in the ACC hierarchy after Jameis Winston moved on. I still wouldn't say that 2014 had true parity like the early BCS seemed to have.

It's pretty amazing how only a few teams have really been a threat. it sure as hell didn't used to be like that so how did it get like this?

I'm not interested in hearing about recruiting because f*** that there's plenty of good talent to go around.

Even Saban changed his philosophy and it hasn't affected him.

One program that stands out to me who is what is wrong with college football is Tennessee. You've got a fat turd for an athletic director in Phil fullmer who has just slowly but surely helped run that program into a freaking bone dry Porta John of a program.

At least Harbaugh knows that he's not worth big time money so he's willing to take less money or whatever but I seriously think Michigan administration is just a f****** bunch of morons if they continue to have faith in this guy because he hasn't done s*** especially against your arch rival in any other conference especially the SEC if you can't beat your rival and it's been three or four years you're getting your arse fired.

It's just s*** like that teams who were once powerhouses who are now a f****** doormat or just someone who can trade punches with you either two or almost three quarters.

But also make no mistake this year was a turd sandwich for pretty much everybody so covid really made college football and all of its flaws magnified I think.

I mean what you're saying is true but this also may not be the time to sit here and just s*** on it and believe me I've done my fair share of it before. I've been saying the same s*** on this board for about four or five years now and just getting laughed off by college football f****** homers. All I want this is for the sport to be more competitive again.

the playoff is now the only goal instead of making a BCS or NY Bowl game. Since it the goal, top recruits want to go to the teams who will make the playoffs, so it’s turned into a self fulfilling prophecy.

“The eye test” instead of a set criteria for making the playoffs has widened the gap and made college football suck and into a regional sport. When making the Rose Bowl isn’t exciting for a recruit or a fan base, you know it’s a sad state of affairs.

It's probably about to get a helluva lot worse. Finebaum had a guy on this afternoon talking about the whole NIL thing and that whatever bill Congress puts on Biden's desk to sign, it's going to be a coup for the major players and a bust for smaller schools looking to make a name for themselves. The elite programs will be able to offer recruits more exposure and better licensing deals to come play at their schools, thus making the divide all the more cavernous.

Big and historically successful programs need to start recruiting better and stop allowing BAMA, Ohio St, and Clemson usurp all the elite talent. The main reason BAMA and Clemson are in the title game is depth and rosters. The recruiting is off the charts and other teams outside your normal top 3/4 aren’t picking up their end of the bargain.

Texas, USC, Florida, Miami are just some of the programs that need to step it up and distribute these kids evenly across the country. The less 5*/high 4* kids stacked at 2-3 schools, the more parity across college football right now.

There’s just a monopoly right now and those programs picking up their share of recruits would help. I don’t blame BAMA and Clemson for doing what they’re doing, but again, other programs need to start doing their part.

Oregon, North Carolina even...are starting to land these high profile recruits, but that’s not enough. With Texas with a new coach, if he starts hot on the trail like I think he will, I really think things will start spreading out.

Schools in Cali need to start stepping up as well. UCLA, USC. Spread the recruits out, increase the parity.

I think the pac needs a resurgence to make college football great again.

They can rarely crack the playoffs as is but I thought college football was more fun when they were a strong conference.

Do you have examples of someone more accomplished that 2018 12-0 Notre Dame?

Probably 2000...

The final AP Poll was:

1. Oklahoma
2. Miami
3. Washington
4. Oregon State
5. Florida State
6. VaTech
7. Oregon
8. Nebraska
9. Kansas St.
10. Florida

After that you had in order the USC, Florida and Alabama dynasties.
