Freak athlete. Slightly underwhelming but all in a solid career.

The 13 TD season gave a glimpse of his potential

Alex Smith stopped being “shitty” once the 49er found an offensive coordinator worth a damn.

It’s possible that Singletary saved Vernon Davis’ career that day.

The play calling in San Francisco was very offensive until just recently

3 of his 4 best seasons (2009-2011) were actually on Smith-led Niner teams. If anything Smith relied on the TE position too much as a safety valve - for most of his early career he couldn't stretch the field to the WRs like he did in KC, so Davis benefitted big-time.

The other year (2013) was great for Davis because he became the focal point of the offense by necessity
1) the NFL (led by Pete Caroll Week 2) figured out that all you had to do was jam Kaepernick's receivers at the line of scrimmage and you were golden, Kap couldn't stick with them or throw them open ...can't do that with VD so easily
2) his numbers were inflated with WR1 (Crabtree) only playing 5 games

Not inaccurate to say Smith limited Davis' upside, but the good years he can point to at least happened under #11.

I'd be more disappointed with his OC's more than his QB's. He really only had one good OC before Harbaugh (Martz) but that system and the crisp short TE routes for a super raw 2nd year Davis was a terrible fit. He drew bad hands all around, he should look back at his career with pride. Glad he got a ring in DEN.

Yeah good point. He didn’t do much from 06-08. Then 2009 season happened.

Not bad at all but only twice made a Pro Bowl

I would have thought he made it to at least 4 pro bowls

The problem is that you're gauging careers on pro bowl appearances.
