Michigan Panthers - 27
Pittsburgh Maulers – 31

Sunday, June 25, 2023
New Orleans Breakers - 22
Birmingham Stallions - 47

quote:

The defending champion Stallions are favored to repeat. The Stallions, who beat the Memphis Showboats 27-20 over the weekend, have the league's best record at 8-2. In two seasons of the rebooted USFL, the Stallions have gone 19-3.

-- The Breakers are the No. 2 seed in the South Division and will face the Stallions for the third time this year in the semifinals, a rematch of last year's South semifinal. The Breakers clinched a playoff spot by beating the Houston Gamblers on Sunday, 17-10.

-- The Pittsburgh Maulers clinched a semifinal berth by beating the New Jersey Generals on Saturday, 26-6. Fittingly for a team from Pittsburgh, the Maulers have allowed the fewest points in the league. However, they finished with just a 4-6 record, and needed victories in the final two weeks to reach four wins -- which was somehow good enough to win the division.

-- The Michigan Panthers got the final playoff spot by coming back from a 20-6 halftime deficit against the Philadelphia Stars on Sunday night in a 23-20 victory. The Panthers, Stars and Maulers all finished 4-6 in the East, but the Maulers got the top seed with the best division record (4-2), including going 2-0 against Michigan. The Panthers swept the Stars.

It really does not get much better than watching 4-6 teams fight for a division title.

Pretty fricking dumb that they have a Detroit hub this year but are playing a playoff game w/Michigan and Pitt in Canton Ohio.

Good enough to probably go for another year but not good enough to brag about. Roughly the same as the XFL this year.

quote:

The USFL’s regular season has ended. It’s time to compare viewership from the second season of the four-letter spring league with the return of the XFL for first time since 2020.

Via Anthony Crupi of Sportico.com, the two leagues “finished in a dead heat.”

Per the report, the XFL averaged 602,073 viewers per game, and the USFL averaged 604,175 per game.

The USFL still has its postseason, with two games this weekend followed by the championship game.

It’s not great, but it’s not horrible, either. The question becomes the ratings that the networks televising the games would have generated with other (cheaper) programming.

It’s hard to make an apples to apples comparison. More of the USFL’s game have been on OTA networks compared to XFL which was mostly on ESPN. The games USFL had on FS1 and USA really drag them down though. FS1 has never really been able to challenge ESPN ratings wise and I don’t think USA has become a normal place for people to look for sports just yet. Either way it looks like there are roughly 600k people on average willing to watch spring football w/a top out of 2 million (USFL on NBC after the Kentucky Derby) and a bottom of 200k (USA after an L&O SVU rerun) heavily depending on the network and the lead in.

Touchdown Michigan but a face mask penalty. No TD.

Edit: Play reviewed. Not a face mask. It's a TD.

This is some Les Miles asstastic game and clock management here. I can't believe Pitt wasn't just running up the middle and letting the clock run when they were on the 1.

Michigan ties the game with a field goal to go to OT. 27-27.
