Link is to al.com https://www.al.com/sports/2021/10/usfl-bjcc-reach-tentative-moa-to-bring-relaunch-season-to-birmingham.html

quote:

The USFL will have use of Protective Stadium for up to 40 games, plus three playoff games from about April 15, 2022, to July 3, 2022, at no cost, according to a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding between the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center (BJCC) and the National Spring Football League (NSFL, which owns the USFL) obtained by AL.com.

quote:

The season will include eight teams, including a revival of the Birmingham Stallions, playing in a “bubble”-like format similar to the National Basketball Association’s 2020 season.

Not going to lie. I would probably go to about 10-15 of these games.

So Birmingham is supposed to support multiple pro football franchises?

That’s one thing that is a little unclear. How are the other 7 teams supposed to build a fan base if all games are in Birmingham.

Maybe Nashville or ATL would travel? Memphis?

They should have just put out a press release titled

“We are just cheap content to shove on FS1”

What's the purpose of a one stadium league?
This isn't about Covid anymore is it?

So they don’t have to rent another one

They looked at the television numbers of the last Spring football league and realized they don’t need fans in the seats to be profitable.

They do want fans in the seats for better television so they are planning on selling the good seats for ten dollars and the rest for five dollars.

Spring football beats basketball, hokey, and NASCAR in ratings.

I heard a radio interview on the guy who was heading up the new league.

He said the TV ratings on the Spring football league last year were better than basketball, hokey and NASCAR.

This is why Fox and NBC want to start this.

Also, with streaming they make more money selling advertising for live sports events than TV shows.

Basically to jump start the league. Each team will be tied to a city. It will be cheaper to host in Birmingham than the San Diego team traveling, for example. There will not be team owners. Fox owns the teams so all decisions are centralized. Basically, this will cut overall cost and help the league get past the first season.

TL;DR

It will help ownership remove unknown variables for cost.

It's a way to keep costs down while providing programming that will probably do decently (not compared to fall football but compared to other things it goes against). These teams are not going to be able to build a legitimate in-person fanbase no matter where they are.

It will be like the old Roller Derby - just assign city names to teams which have no real connection with that city.

This will surely work.

Oh yeah, we want all of you to tune in and support your teams from your cities and we are going to put a team in BHM that will have home field advantage every single game.

How much would home field really matter in this league? We're talking about a few thousand people.

As far as TV markets, I bet local markets don't really drive the ratings either. Memphis was in the AAF and probably had the same local rating whether Memphis was playing or any other team.

I don't necessarily disagree with you but I think we're talking about some tiny differences that the league thinks they can make up for by having all the teams in one location.

Really depends on the quality of the product. I’ll probably watch a few (in person and in tv).

The guy in the interview also said they don’t need fans in the stands to make money.

Money was going to come from television.

But they wanted fans because that made for a better television product. The plan is to sell the best seats for ten dollars, everything else for five dollars, and give a lot of tickets to groups of people who would use them.

They also plan to move each team to their host city in year three.

I’m probably biased because it is in Birmingham so I want it to succeed. But does anyone else think this isn’t a terrible idea and kind of makes sense.

It’s all about TV. And decent games will bring viewers. Period.
