Right. People forget we drew the group of death that year. Czech Republic was strong at that time (still don't get how they didn't advance instead of Ghana), and we did play the world champions to a draw. Its the 98 squad I can't forgive.

they have failed but i would take the odds of france and argentina to make it out of the group stages every day and twice on sundays rather than the odds of the US doing that. of course every team chokes once in a while, i mean england didnt qualify for the euros, but you cant tell me that's their tradition

We were terrible in 1998. In 2006, we had the hardest group. Though we played terribly, its not that much of a surprise. We are clearly a tier 2 team, closer to Sweden than an elite team if you need a point of reference.

Are you referring to '06? Because, IMO, the two best matches that the US has ever played were against Germany '02 and Italy '06. We lost one and tied the other, but that was the best football that USA has ever played. I believe that.

Completely agree. We pretty much outplayed both teams. But the Ghana game was inexcusable, as was some other choices Arena made.
