Washington caps goalie diddling with himself, while behind the net with puck. Berglund steals and gives it to Backes for empty net.

blues 4-1 final

12-4-1

That's a great sign. Gonchar may have been a great pick up indeed.

yup. even at 40 years old he will definitely help out PK and Markov with the shots from the point!

Rangers lose again. Nashville goes 2 out of three on the week.

How in the frick is Dallas so bad? Why did they trade Gonchar when defense and Penalty kill are their weakness??

Nash STOPPED!
it was pretty crazy in the arena. about 1/3 of the fans left and while the horn sounded indicating a replay, no announcement was made. people didn't know anything was up until they saw the players coming out of the tunnel.

that hit on girardi was devastating in real time. i was sitting in that end, and girardi was knocked toward me and it looked like he was hit by a car.

Can someone please explain the NHL standings to a hockey noob. Do teams that win in a shootout get credit for a win and a tie?

Shootout win = win (2 pts) shootout loss = you almost got there (1 pt)

How does it factor into their record though? Looking at the standings, and I see a bunch of teams with ties.

Ie: the Red Wings are currently 8-4-5

There is no such thing as a tie, you either win or lose. A win in OT is a win, 2 points. A loss in OT is an OTL and worth 1 point.

8 wins 4 losses 5 OT losses.

8 wins at 2 points each = 16, 5 OTL's at 1 point each = 21 points.

So an Overtime loss & a shootout loss both get you1 point? That seems kinda dumb.

Getting to overtime earns 1 point. If you win, you get the additional 2nd point like with any win. If you lose, you just get that same 1 point for forcing OT.

A shootout is not really overtime, it just determines a winner so there is no tie after OT ends, and does not count towards ROW (regulation+overtime wins) which is the main tiebreaker.

All the excitement about signing Spezza & Hemsky was that it will give Dallas two good lines instead of relying solely on the top line like last season. Spezza was NOT supposed to be playing on the top line - this team needed him to head the 2nd line to give them depth and another scoring line. Unfortunately, Val Nichushkin (Spelling?) has only played a handful of games and just had hip surgery, so he will now be out for most of the season, if not all of it. He was the top line RW but, with him out now, Spezza has been playing on the top line in his place which more or less kills the thought of Dallas having two scoring lines. It turns them back into what they were last season: a one line offensive team with bad defense.

So they are basically the same team as last season again with potentially more fire power on the top line since Spezza is better than anyone they put on the top line last season with Seguin & Benn. BUT, Jamie Benn is currently on a 10 or 11 game goal scoring drought and Spezza is racking up assists, but hasn't really been scoring goals either. So if two of the three top line forwards go on a cold streak of scoring goals at the same time, like they are going through now, this team will play like shite since they rely so much on that top line for their goals.

And Hemsky isn't scoring either on the 2nd line. He actually isn't playing bad hockey, he just cant score goals at all - even at point blank range.

Gonchar's skills really diminished last season. He was the worst defender for the Stars last season on a team that had really bad defense. He wasn't going to be a top-4 defender for them going forward for the rest of this season either. Trading him doesn't hurt them at all. It actually gave them over $3 million in additional cap room which many believe will help the Stars trade for another top-4 defender at some point this season.

So basically the Stars are now back to being the same team they were last season because of the long term injury to the top line. IMO, they'll go on a winning streak sooner rather than later once Jamie Benn gets hot again, but they are no longer a potential top 3 team in the division like many people thought. They'll be back to fighting for the final playoff spot all season.

Time for a look at the upcoming week.

Rangers: playing god awful hockey right now.
Tampa - Loss
Philadelphia - Win
Buffalo - Win
Montreal - Loss

I have them going 2-2, but only because Buffalo sucks, and so does Philly. Then again NY sucks too so they could legitimately go 0-4 down this stretch. But hey! Rick Nash finally looks good!

Predators:
Toronto - Loss
Ottawa - Win
Florida - Win

2-1 this week I think. They'll probably start Hutton just to give him some reps so either Ottawa or Florida could be a toss up. All eastern division.
