Longer than that.

St. Johns was pressured in the 80's along with Marquette.

Dartmouth and Stanford are probably the only schools who changed the name voluntarily within the school.

Did Notre Dame make them drop the interlocking ND too?

I'm not aware of any issue between Notre Dame and North Dakota, but they ARE retiring the interlocking ND from current use and relegating it to what they call the "Dacotah Legacy Collection" whatever that means.

All sport teams should drop the NA theme mascots. I mean, could a team have a black guy on their jersey and call themselves the Africans, or Black Skins?

That is not even their best logo.

It is a damn shame they got railroaded but FSU did not. The Lakota tribe should be ashamed of themselves for this.

This was the logo they used to sell the name change then said no we will not use it.

It would have kept the history of the Sioux name, the history of the old logos, the history of the state, a cool logo, and not been offensive.

Dartmouth was the Big Green already. Never mind forgot they had an Indian as a logo in the late 60's.

UNT switched back from Eagles to Green Eagles when originally it was the Mean Green. People got pissy because it reminded them of being border patrol and insensitive to immigrants.

That is a pretty sweet logo. I love all the American Indian logos. Shame to see them going.

William & Mary changed to the Tribe. Kind of cutting it close.

No, I'm pretty sure that was just a concept logo someone made for the Blackhawks during the peak of the name change rabble.

William & Mary changed from "Indians" to Tribe way back in the 1970s....it had nothing to do with the recent mandate from the NCAA. The NCAA did, however, tell them that this logo was "hostile and offensive."

So now you'll only see this:

Apparently feathers offend people.

The Seminole tribe is very proud of FSU and their use of Seminoles. A tribe member actually makes all of the clothes that Chief Osceola wears during games

If you watched the Frozen Four, most UND fans wear the old jerseys and wave the old flags. NCAA can't frick with dat.

They initially said they would consider it the way I understood it.

It doesn't matter now, as the logo change has cost UND millions.

Lakota approved the old logo as it was made by the Native Americans on campus. UND got hosed early in this but FSU did not. Go read the open letter by Kupchella. It is a masterpiece and must read.

ETA:

If the Seminoles in Oklahoma decide that the Seminole name is offensive, should FSU be forced to remove the logo and name?

hey should have just kept their name and logo and said that their name "fighting Sioux" was a fictional tribe with the same name.

They should have gone back to the one tribe that was holding out and given them a choice between-

A) Fighting Sioux
B) 1st Calvary (defeated the Sioux after Little Big Horn)

And how long have they been the old nickname and the American Indians are just now deciding not to approve?

It wasn't the tribe that made them change it was the NCAA. They were losing money by not being able to host events.
