UFC news: GSP wants Khabib at 165lbs, Dana has initiated calls

Rumors have been swirling regarding a potential Nurmagomedov vs. St-Pierre superfight for years now, but nothing fire-like has ever come from the endless smoke. The last official word on the record was from GSP saying he was no longer in the headspace to challenge Khabib because he wasn’t able to train with COVID-19 restrictions locking Canada down tight.
But according to Khabib’s manager Ali Abdelaziz, that position has changed in the last two weeks.
“Ten days ago, Dana White called me,” Abdelaziz said on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’ podcast. “And he said Georges St-Pierre, he said he will fight Khabib. Non-title fight, 165 pounds.”
“But in a way, we’ve been waiting for Georges… I like Georges. He’s my friend. We’ve been waiting for Georges for four or five years. ‘I’m coming, I’m not coming.’ At the end of the day, the UFC wanted to make him fight at lightweight. He went on to welterweight. Khabib was the lightweight champion. But now he said, ‘Hey, Khabib’s retired, I’m retired, what about coming back (to) fight Khabib now?’”
“To be honest, as a human, I don’t want to see Georges St-Pierre in this,” Ali continued. “He’s 40 years old today. It’s his birthday. Khabib is a man wrestled bears, alligators, and lions. They both have the same game, but Khabib is much younger, more ferocious. I don’t think it will be even a fair fight.”
So what is this, just more smoke Abdelaziz is hotboxin’ with Tyson? Or the beginning of the fire? At this point the MMA scene has been buzzing about this fight for so long that it’s hard to get hyped until Dana White, the only guy who for some reason seems lukewarm on the idea, says it’s happening.

Great fighters, but I don’t think GSP wins this one.

GSP is probably thinking “frick yeah I’ll get tapped for millions upon millions of dollars.”
Hell, he might catch Khabib and tap him, but I mean this has got to be the easiest decision GSP has made in a while.

GSP probably just cashed millions for appearing in Disney's Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Now if he gets this payday? Guy can vacation til the end of his days.

I can see it, GSP is looking leaner and is keeping his training up

Would be one hell of a win at 40 years old.

In his prime, GSP murders him at any weight. Now, I'm not so sure.

If anyone can fight beyond 40 at a high level it is gsp

Khabib retired as a promise to his mother and because his father passed. Why do people keep wanting him to come out of retirement? I don't think he will.

Haven’t really kept up with GSP since he first retired. But he could take people down with ease and prevent getting taken down.
If both he and Khabib neutralize each other’s takedowns, it becomes a striking match. Not that GSP is a knockout artist, but can Khabib out-strike GSP?

He’s been training with John Danaher and the best grapplers in the world nonstop since he quit fighting. I’d be more interested in seeing a straight grappling match between the two, I think Khabib wins because he’s younger and fresher but GSP isn’t going to go out there looking all washed up and out of shape like Chuck Liddell did

i'll go a step further and say it'll be easy money. khabib is strong, for a lightweight. gsp is stronger, faster and a much better striker.
40 isn't over the hill for someone like gsp. he's a natural athlete and far more athletic than khabib, even at 40. actually no comparison in physical ability.
i think people project themselves and/or other people they know at 40 onto situations.

According to oddsshark, Khabib would be a -265 favorite.

Khabib would definitely win this fight.

Like he tapped the smaller Al Iaquenta?
Easy decision for GSP.

I’m not conceived gsp would win, but there’s no way in hell khabib smothers him like he has his last several opponents. Gsp is 10x the grappler as any opponent khabib has faced his last several fights and that includes porrier who’s a bjj Black belt. The danaher death squad guys are on a different level.

Despite lacking the pedigree, GSP is one of the best mma wrestlers ever. His TDD and TDs landed statistics are actually better than Khabib's. My biggest concern for him if this fight were to happen would be his gas tank. In the Bisping fight it looks like he was going to gas, but he ended up catching his second wind before finishing him.
