Chip is off to a rough start

quote:

Perusing the national recruiting rankings this week, a major team jumped out to me: UCLA. The Bruins are 84th. The Bruins have eight commits, and no four- or five-stars.

The only Power 5 teams rated below UCLA are Utah, Kansas State, and Kansas.

That’s bad company as far as recruiting goes, especially because UCLA typically signs more four- and five-star players than those three programs combined.

I can’t figure out what UCLA is doing on the recruiting trail.

It’s not as if UCLA is aggressively pursuing and making relationships with a lot of elite recruits. By my count, UCLA has offered only 67 players. That’s fewer than Stanford, which is historically as stingy as anybody with its offers, due to the difficulty of players gaining academic admission there. And it’s far fewer than Pac-12 foes like Utah and Arizona State, both of whom have offered more than 200 players.

"I think the staff believes it’s doing better with certain recruits than we believe.

For whatever reason, they aren’t recruiting with the persistence of other programs. It’s uncertain if they perceive it that way -- whether they believe they are recruiting as persistently as other programs or they are knowingly choosing not to."

There’s a huge difference between not wanting to play the recruiting game and not showing enough love to prospect after prospect.

I really thought Chip would come in and be a MAJOR spark for the program.

I swear to god I forget that he's their coach every single week until a thread like this pops up.

Thought so too, since L.A. and California was a big pipeline for him in Oregon.

Wasn't the knock on Chip that he didn't recruit worth a shite, hated recruiting and was lazy at recruiting?

He hired some bad arse recruiters, got busted and moved to the NFL.

He?

He hired really "good" recruiters.

There was an article back then that Chip hated recruiting and was lazy about it...compared to some coaches who fricking text recruits everyday.

Ergo, he got in some connections.

The fact that NU and UCLA are winless warms my heart. Kelly more so since I am not a fan of him. Frost, I think will turn NU around even though crootin to NU is completely different then when he was a player.

I’ll never understand UCLA not being a perennial powerhouse in football. You are in the best part of LA and you play in the Rose Bowl. How are they not top 5 in recruiting year in and year out.

They sure were back in the day with Freeman McNeil, Aikman, those mid-1990s teams, those 1960s teams, its an anomaly what's occurred from a holistic perspective though I agree

Chip has never recruited well. I remember always seeing Oregon’s final recruit class and where it ranked in the nation and felt like we should’ve done better.
