They could knock down the Iberville and put it there. Sadly that won't happen.

They can make room for a 32,000 stadium, which would be fine

I saw the drawings for the proposed stadium once, looked like a clever use of space.

Tulane's Uptown campus is only 110 acres in size, and it's size issue is further compounded by the fact the houses surrounding the campus ain't exactly cheap.

I wasn't aware that 2003 was only two years ago.

Tulane can get Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern and maybe schools like Michigan State to do a 2 for 1 deal. I think those schools would like to sell alumni packages and maybe see if it could help with recruiting since LA has so much talent.

That school would probably end up with a lot of wasted resources and wishing it had just scheduled someone from the MAC instead of Tulane. Big schools don't like to go to small schools especially ones not in their recruiting area.

There was no such talk in 2008.

My roommates played at tulane (2006-2010) and they'd tell me they could hear individual fans yell at games..one said he knew exactly who was saying the profanities

All those schools have plucked players from down here before.

The article he linked is titled "At Tulane, Sports Revival After Katrina's Wind and Water". I have no idea why he thought that supported his stance.

So has every school in the country. LSU got Spencer Ware from Ohio should we schedule a game at Akron to try to set up a recruiting base there? If any of those Big Ten schools don't have a coach with strong La. ties they're going to come up empty most of the time.

Minn and Mich State have scheduled similar deals with Florida Atlantic because of the talent in FL. Big Ten fans are tired of MAC schools. There's no reason for Mich State to play Toledo or Akron all the time since kids in Ohio allready know Michigan State. Does LSU have to play USL for recruiting in LA?

A lot more good talent leaving Florida because there's so many more people. And again I'm sure Mich. St. and Minn. probably have a recruiter with connections to that area on staff.

Saving money is the reason for playing local schools

Louisiana produces enough talent that LSU can sign the top 25 in-state players and still leave a lot of blue chips.

Big Ten schools can get in on that by offering the B(C)S status and the facilities and resources that go with it...plus the opportunity to play in better bowl games. It's worth their while. And the trip to NOLA is a good recruiting pitch anywhere, not just in Louisiana.

How much of that left over talent is snatched up by Ole Miss, A&M, Arkansas, Miss. St., Tennessee, TCU, and Houston ? Those lower level Big Ten schools won't be beating those schools for those kids very often.

Yes and no. I mean wouldn't a kid rather go to Minnesota and play in a new stadium in Minneapolis versus TCU and Houston and even Starkpatch.

Additionally a kid may want to get out of Louisiana and and the Deep South. Honestly I think some kids from Louisiana might rather go to Michigan State versus Miss State and Arkansas and Ole Miss if LSU or Alabama doesn't offer or the playing time looks more promising up North.

They might get one a year but never enough to warrant the waste of the recruiting hours and the lost of home game revenue because they're playing a road game at Tulane.

Yet, by the end of the weekend, all but two of the athletes committed to Tulane, a success rate nearly unheard of in college athletics.

Like so many institutions in this city, Hurricane Katrina knocked the Tulane athletic department to the ground, threatening its survival.

Even as Johnston and others celebrate the success of Tulane athletics, nearly everyone acknowledges that the program faces significant challenges. Many of the same obstacles persist that led the university’s board of administrators to review Tulane’s athletic program in 2003, including poor attendance at football games and the rising cost of staying competitive in Division I.

quote:

“The question came up, as a university, we don’t have a lot of resources,” Cowen said in a recent interview. In 2003, attendance at football games rarely exceeded 30,000, and the athletic department ran an annual deficit that ranged from $7 million to $10 million a year. “The fans aren’t coming to the games and they’re not supporting it. So why are we doing it?”

While university administrators were debating the fate of sports at Tulane, its athletes continued their season on the road. Classes had been canceled for the fall semester, but the teams continued to carry the Tulane name.

Despite the good will generated by Tulane’s athletes after Katrina, Cowen said he remained skeptical that the enthusiasm had translated to increased donations or attendance at football games, which continues to be a source of frustration. In 2006, an average of about 19,000 fans attended football games at Tulane, less than the average attendance of 26,600 for other Conference USA universities.

READ THE frickING ARTICLE..........sure sounded like bleak times, sure the title was intended to be a puff piece on the rebuilding of Tulane after Katrina BUT nothing in that article proved what they were doing in football was successful.
