I don't know if I'd use the word "elite" but they were certainly above average and very good during their early runs. I really hope he gets it turned around. I like seeing the Louisiana teams do well. I'll always pull for LSU first and will probably never attend a Tulane game but it would be nice for them to not suck anymore.

I'll never pull for the weenies in any sport, but with Jones & his arrogance & hate for LSU gone, I can at least not dislike them near as much. His & the weenies' fan base's extreme hate for LSU back then makes all these USL fans today look like children. I may well be wrong but am pretty sure Jones never said one word bout what Skip did after losing his last game in that regional.

I'd bet you're wrong.

What hate did Jones show towards LSU that isn't usually shown toward a rival?

And you would be completely wrong in this post.
Jones was brash - big difference between that and hate.

Said Jones: "All the times you're out by yourself, just going through practice plans, thinking about how do you get this team (to the CWS), what it would feel like, what you would say. "After Skip (spoke to the team), there's nothing I can say. I can't top it. I'm not going to try to top it."

There you go bud and I'm sure he's talked about it plenty other times.

Respectfully disagree with you. Tulane baseball was the Number One ranked team in the nation for most of the 2005 season/ year and came in to the College World Series as the number one seed. Also we are ranked by US News and World Report as the top 52 academic national university in the nation and the top academic university in Louisiana.

So one year as the 1 seed makes you elite?

They were the #5 National seed in 2001 as well. 2 national seeding, 2 CWS trips and another Super Regional appearance in a 5 year stretch is pretty close.

Tulane will shortly be joining LSU and UL-L in regional, super regional and CWS play similar to the pre 2008 period.

I know Tulane made it to Omaha twice, how many super regionals?

Tulane isn't a stepping stone job in baseball. It's a place coaches want to be.

Don't be silly.

I don't think he's being silly at all. Kids will want to play for a good team at a good school in New Orleans. They've got a nice stadium, and the New Orleans economy continues to boom. If he wins, he'll make just as much there as anywhere else in the country outside of 5 schools. Tulane pays more than Rice does

I really don't see a reason Tulane can't get back Super Regional play under this guy

They haven't been able to do it under Jones in the last 8 yrs or more.

ETA It's been 6 yrs since they even made the NCAA tourney.....elite my arse. They won't even be able to keep up with ULL who is gonna take a real nose dive next year.

Almost like something happened down there that may have impacted to the state of their program

They were able to hire a good coach who has connections. If ULL can have a good team, they certainly can.

Either way, they pay for baseball, and I wouldn't consider Tulane a stepping stone. If you get to where a SEC school wants you, there isn't really a reason to leave.

It won't happen in a year. There is a difference b/w being elite and being a stepping stone. He made the tourney 3 years in a row at Sam Houston State

Ok just so I'm clear you are blaming Katrina for Tulane baseball sucking for a decade under a "great coach".....yea I'm done here.

Nobody is saying Tulane is elite right now dumbass. Can you read? From 2001-2005 they were at least very close. I

If you don't think Katrina had a huge negative impact on Tulane you're crazy. In 2006 they had a top 10 recruiting class that was destroyed by the MLB draft. Katrina probably played a factor in some of those guys not making it to campus. A few just got great offers.

If Pierce leaves for Rice in the next 5 years it means he was successful at Tulane and we'll be in position to get another good coach. But I highly doubt he leaves for Rice.

Look dude just because you are good for a year or so doesn't make you elite....by definition part of being elite is staying power.

I'll give you 06 with Katrina (although a private school has less of an argument than a public school)....but what about 08,09,10,11,12,13, and 14?

2 CWS appearances, #5 and #1 national seeds and another Super Regional appearance in a 5 year stretch. That's more than 1 good year.

Why does a private school have less of an argument?
I don't claim to have the answers for what's gone on the past 6-7 years. They lost a great assistant coach Mark Kingston. I've heard plenty other reasons/excuses for the recent decline. I can't pinpoint exactly what the reason is. Tuition has gone up big time since 05.

I agree. LSU has not been elite for 15 years.
