Nobody said u can't teach. It's the fact teaching certain things means nothing. Grip posture stance hit ball.

I never said you need to teach a kid how to do anything too complex..

Regardless of what age you are, you have to learn the basics first.

If you want take a look at the top jr golfers from Asia, Mexico, and others and see the ones who won a ton early then stopped playing once high school came. It's a ton of them. They were taught too early and they got worn out.
I bet those kids were coached like they were in the army to the point where it is like a job.

I'm not suggesting that at all.

I posted about how I never had any real instruction until high school and had to break bad habits I taught myself from the time I started playing when I was a little kid. And you said:

Lol at forming bad habits at 7. C'mon man.
I'm so pissed at my dad because of that time I developed that bad habit swinging the club at 3. Damn him. I'm still trying to fix that.
If a kid never has any instruction and they are teaching themselves, they will develop bad habits.

That's all I'm saying.

When I have a young Nitro Eviscerator, I'm gonna give him an ax and make him chop wood until he's 11. On his 12th birthday, he gets a Colt .45, as I did, with pearl grip and a 4 iron.

When he shows me something worth looking at, I'll hand down my 910.

For example.. my shot, while pretty good, could not improve anymore because I was not shooting properly. There was a ceiling.

It took a long time to break the old habit and change my shooting form to the proper form to the point where it became second nature and I actually improved past where I was before I changed my shot.

If I would have been shooting properly from the start, I would have put in so many more reps with good form and would have been an even better shooter.

Side we talking about a 7 year old. Who hits maybe 40 balls a week. Lol he isn't developing anything. And I doubt you took more shots than that a week to develop a bad habit.

40 balls a week? Or 40 shots a week?

Who is only hitting 40 balls in an entire week?

Edit: I mean who is only shooting 40 shots an entire week.

Dude in not arguing anymore. You can think what you want from a basketball background. I'll think what I want from a golf background.

You should have that little shite putting like there's no tomorrow.

I know very little about golf training, but I do know you start close, and work your way out.

Take a little wisdom from the great Harvey Penick. He knew more than anyone in this thread...

get that vibe from the post

I don't know man. When I was seven I was competitive as shite. All I wanted to do was play baseball and be the best at it, nothing else mattered to me. Might have been odd, but I think some kids are just wired that way. Maybe his kid really likes golf.

That being said, I know my dad wasn't about the details like the OP about my athletics at that age or any age really. Different strokes. I don't have a problem with it.

At that age, it's the basic fundamentals. The most important thing is that it's fun, and they want to do it, you don't force them to.

Good grip, no happy feet, back to the target, belly button to target.

And let him just run around and putt.

Once every few weeks we play a game at the driving range. They have a ten foot wall to use in practicing wedge shots from up close. I line up twenty tees, beginning 10' from the wall and then every foot back to around 30' away. From each tee area he hits one shot to get it over the wall. If he gets more over than not, I give him $10. If less, then I give him $1. The little guy has taken $10 from me three times this summer. It's a game for him and he loves winning but hates losing more, but for me it teaches him shot visualization with his wedges. The pro at Hank Haney taught me to use this technique with him to do just what you suggested; start close and work your way out.

My dad was a college golf coach for a time while I was growing into the game. He just let me go out there and hit balls and play a few holes with him during the weekday. You're overthinking all of this Earl Woods.
