Traditional playoff system works fine in FCS, why not FBS?

FCS has a 24 team playoff that works just fine. Why couldn't this model work in FBS?
Posted on 10/19/18 at 10:14 am to Fourteen28
24 is way too much. four works fine, i would be happy with six but anything after that and it starts getting ridiculous

This has never been brought up before.

Just give it time and it will eventually take place. We are working our way to it. We all know that a 4 team playoff isnt enough.
It will slowly expand to take on more teams. Each one of the playoff games will hold a "bowl" title. They will eliminate one game from the regular season to allow for the extra games to take place. And that is how it will be done. id say by 2025 we have at least an 6 team playoff system.

It should never be more than 8. Even 8 is probably too much.

I think 8 but 6 would work if you make it so that teams that back into the playoffs without winning their conference have to play an extra game

Exactly. Who's to say a 9th seeded team couldn't make a run and win the championship? Seems kind of stupid to keep so many teams from having a shot.

Same. The questionable teams outside of the 4 bubble deserve a shot IMO and that would eliminate the darlings getting a pass bc they are darlings.

Sure, a 24 team playoff could work. A 65 team playoff could work. Anything could work. But would it be better? Right now the 24th ranked team is Mich Stat 4-2. Does that team even merit a chance at the NC?
Posted on 10/19/18 at 10:26 am to Fourteen28
Because college football fans have proven time and time again they want their champion to be 100% subjective

By this rationale a 4-team playoff should be sufficient for all of sports. NBA, NFL, college hoops....

The 24th ranked team would not be in the playoff though.
You take the conference winners-11
You take the at larges-13
You seed them at the end and go.
You should not punish a team for doing the first goal it has, winning its conference.
The reason it does not work is because we have been told for years that CFB is special and all games matter. People believe teams will "tank" Which is not true, but the sheep have it in their minds.
The worst thing about the CFP is they rank weekly and release, they should do it 1 time and just release the top seed weekly.

10 teams would be the best possible outcome. But money and greed is why it would never happen. Top two seeds get a first round bye.
Include all P5 champions, top 2 G5 ranked teams and 3 at large. Independent programs could only fill one of the at large slots. But must be ranked higher than any other non P5 champion.

That's a lot of games for kid's at that level of play in college.
Then you also have to consider the power that the old bowl system still has. It's hard to get past that.

What I would like is to take all division winners and conference winners and seed. If there are any spots left then fill
This year you would have if the season ended right now:
AAC: Houston, UCF
ACC: Clemson, Virginia Tech
Big XII: Texas (since there are no divisions)
B1G: tOSU, Northwestern
CUSA: UAB, FIU
MAC: NIU, Buffalo
MWC: Utah St, Hawaii
Pac 12: Stanford, USC
SEC: Alabama, Florida
SBC: Ga Spouthern, ULL
Your 5 at larges would be:
Notre Dame
LSU
Michigan
Georgia
Oklahoma
Play the Opening round games on campus.
Then use the New Years Bowls as the playoffs. Making the NY 6 the Quarters and Semis. Also put top 4 teams in Bowl games their conference winner or in geographic footptint
So if you are top 4
Alabama: Peach
Clemson: Orange
tOSU: Rose
Notre Dame: Sugar
LSU: Sugar
Oklahoma: Cotton
Texas Cotton
etc.

Well that’s not true, everyone has a shot, win all your games and you most likely end the year ranked 9th. Also it’s not about rankings, the playoff committee does take that into account but ultimately if the playoff system was to expand, they are more likely to put in an outside flyer like an undefeated UCF last year

10 teams means the top 6 get a bye. Basically two play-in games for an 8 team bracket.

Yes, because of these things called upsets that happen in CFB. That provides a lot of excitement in the regular season. Why not in the playoffs?
