During their first championship season in 1993-94 the Rockets traded Robert Horry to the Pistons for Sean Elliot but Elliot failed the physical because of his kidney problems.
Before the Rockets traded for Barkley before the 1996-97 season they were on the verge of trading for Tim Hardaway. Don't remember who would've been involved.
There were multiple times the Rockets almost traded for Damon Stoudamire.
The Rockets almost traded Hakeem to the Clippers in 1992 but the Clippers preferred 22-year-old Stanley Roberts.

Before the 2004 season a deal was nearly completed to send Alex Rodriguez to the Red Sox. The Rangers would have gotten Manny Ramirez and Jon Lester in return for Rodriguez. I think the deal fell through over a contract dispute.
Also last year a deal was completed between the Cubs and Braves where Atlanta would receive Ryan Dempster and the Cubs would get Randall Delgado. Dempster vetoed the trade and Delgado was a key piece in the Justin Upton trade.

Read earlier that Drexler was almost traded to the Sonics before he was traded to the Rockets. Would've been swapped for Kendall Gill.
Sonics with Payton, Kemp and Drexler would've been stacked. Prob enough to beat the Van Exel/Peeler/Lynch Lakers in the first round.
