It will be interesting to see who makes the break. I’m guessing Xandro Meurisse to get some mountain points. Not sure if Wellens will go for his 3rd stage out already. Looking at teams with GC riders, AG2R and a team like Trek will look to send a guy up the road.
In the end, I see the two Ineos boys, Pinot, and a handful of guys matching elite power. You would think at least one Movistar boy, Dan Martin, Fuglsang (If truly healthy), Bardet will be there.

Did I see cobbles on a mountain descent earlier? I was not paying much attention but it sure looked like some as a road patch

It was cobbles.
I'm honestly way to excited about the gravel on the final climb to the finish line.

The gravel is gone.
When Chistian VanDeVelde filmed his piece a few weeks ago, riding the stage, he struggled mightily only able to make 6 mph up the climb. It is intense.
However they mentioned in the post-race coverage yesterday that in the last two weeks the road had been paved.

Those guys were being timid. Good for JA for trying to keep his yellow there at the end

JA put up a fight today. Wasn’t expecting that but good on him.

That was an awesome finish.
I need more of that.

He’s great on those high gradients. He fought hard, I think he takes it back on stage 8.
Tomorrow’s sprint will be intense. I think Viviani has to be the favorite, but I want to see Kristoff or Ewan take one. Groenewegen may take it as well (they need to get more organized at the finish).

JA tried to keep yellow but alas the climb was just a pinch too much. Such a beautiful finish today.

He just over cooked it. You can’t blame him for that dig.

I know why it happens, but I HATE when they cut to the breakaway crawling over the line and we end up missing the leaders attacking each other

They/NBCsports really have no control over the tv feed...they’re getting the French tv feed. If I’m wrong about this, I stand corrected.
ETA: you kinda insinuate this in your post?

Depends on the race you are watching.
The easiest to watch and understand are mountain stages and essentially you are looking to see who is breathing the hardest and who cannot keep up with attacks.
Sprint stages are more about seeing who has position and who gets boxed in as position is king.
Best thing to do to learn is that in any race teams have the same 1-2 digits e.g. team xyz has numbers 31-38. Numbers ending in 1 mean team leader/featured rider.
Also looking for special jerseys like the national road race champions for each country. (If you win the National road race you get to wear a team special jersey that is in the style of the national championship jersey) If you win the world road race you get to wear the world championship version of your teams jersey. If you are a former World Champion you wear special sleeves on your team jersey with world colors around the circumference of bottom of the sleeves.
Same goes for time trial jerseys in time trials.

You are correct. French TV was a little too concerned with Bardet and not Teuns pulling away.
Teuns was 949-1 to win the Tour wish I had put down 20 bucks. Don’t think he’s going to win it but he’s a good TT’er and can certainly climb.

You are correct
And it obviously makes total sense to watch the winner cross the line but do I care about Tuens zig zagging across the line? No
Do I care about seeing Alaphilippe and then Thomas attack? Yes

Stage 8 looks like a JA type stage for sure. Not sure how this will be raced, but it’s choppy and most likely will be on the warm side. Probably a nothing but it has possibly...
