I keep explaining to this guy that once this fight is over boxing will be dead in the water. This fight is going to be a horrendous showing like many of Mayweathers fights. After turning all these people off from the fight, there is no big matchup left.

Sure there will be matchups that entice actual boxing fans but nothing for the casual viewer. Boxing's only hope is a KO by Manny leaving Floyd laying prone in the ring. That may stave off the death.

Boxing fans better be praying Pac knocks out Floyd. If it's a boring floyd decision, it might mean the end for boxing.

But degenerates are dropping money on Mayweather and celebrities are spending my year's salary on tickets! And the national sports media have basically sold themselves out to this event.

From what I've seen around town, the number will be closer to 80 million if not higher. The thing people aren't taking into consideration is all the mega rich people that are in town for this fight. Way more than Super Bowl weekend and way more than for any fight ever. Many of these mega rich are from Asia, so these people that are normally placing their bets in Macau are doing so here.

Time for me to educate some of you. Boxing isn't going anywhere. What will your excuse be in the fall when Cotto-Canelo happens on HBO PPV and draws between 1.5 and 1.8 million buys?

And get familiar with the name Felix Verdejo. He's making his HBO debut next month at MSG and will become the next Puerto Rican boxing star and will be a huge draw for many years to come. He's the modern Felix Trinidad. Give him a few years.

Canelo Alvarez is 25 years old and is just entering his prime. He's already been on PPV 3 times and has done well in each of them. Mexico is behind this guy 100% and they are boxing's main audience.

Keep an eye on Terence Crawford, who has made a big splash in the last year or so. I think Top Rank has something special with this guy and he has the ability to be a force for a long time.

People who don't know anything about the sport were saying:

When Tyson retires, boxing is dead
When De La Hoya retires, boxing is dead
When Mayweather retires, boxing is dead
Now it's when Mayweather AND Pacquiao retire, boxing is dead

A "dead" sport would not be on NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox Sports 1, ESPN, HBO, Showtime, TruTV, UniMas and freaking BET.

Class is dismissed.

Ninja please, girls softball is on all of those but HBO and Showtime. You really want to start on BET programming? There may still be some "buys" from the 40-60 age demo, but the future is MMA, and I'm not saying that just to upset boxing fans, though it's funny it does).

The only chance boxing has is a great American heavyweight getting on the scene with some sponsorship. If you are not a fanboy/homer, you realize that boxing as a whole is dying. This fight is an obviously an outlier, and does not represent boxing. Real sports fans can't name more than 3-4 boxers on the street, 2 of which are fighting tonight and about to retire.

why bc they market it better?

there's a reason no MMA fights even approach what this one is gonna do

MMA has a niche, boxing has EVERYBODY when stars fight

Is this the same MMA with declining ratings and PPV buys? Ninja please, no one cares about that brand anymore. They should have stuck with their original format when they actually built stars.

There hasn't been a legit American heavyweight since the early 2000s and the sport has done just fine with welterweights, middleweights, etc. It might not be on SportsCenter every night, but the sport is doing fine.

I've been hearing this for a decade. As I mentioned earlier, the future of boxing is already starting to develop.

Last weekend, Wladimir Klitschko (who very few Americans know or like) took on Bryant Jennings, a guy with 19 career fights, and they sold out Madison Square Garden and it was the most watched boxing match in almost 3 years.

Yeah, it's dying.

Is girls softball aired in primetime on NBC and CBS? Don't think so.

The Klitscho's were part of the 3-4 I mentioned. I consider myself more than a casual fan. I really like boxing and combat sports. Never heard of Jennings and did not know about this "big fight" you speak of. Boxing is popular with a shrinking-aging crowd. Whether MMA is doing well at the moment is irrevelant. I work with young people. They know UFC and don't care about boxing.

Before every Mayweather fight, people make this same claim, yet the dude continues to set records and people continue to tune in. Mayweather has fought the same way for 47 fights

They will tune into his next fight as well

Who?

Canelo, as of now, was involved in the highest grossing boxing match of all time (vs. Mayweather in 2013).

That's who

Just because YOU don't know him doesn't mean he isn't a huge draw.

And Cotto is a top 3 draw in the sport right now. Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Canelo.
