I would say their actual defensive play is still probably upper quarter of the tournament quality teams.. the reason they rate so highly though is what you already called out... limiting offensive possessions for your opponent, and then operating *very* efficiently on the offensive side of the ball. Not a big margin for error, but it works for them.

You realize KenPom uses points allowed per possession in his rankings and has them #1 in defense right

See, this just isn't true. Their points per defensive possession stats are better than everybody else.
They work it to the bottom of the shot clock on the defensive end as well. Other team takes a bad shot at the end of the clock, UVA makes the rebound. Good defense.

Their play in today's game didn't really reflect this for a good portion of the game, as UNC-W largely shot themselves in the foot, but there were certainly moments where defensively they put it together.
Against better offensive teams, I feel like their D breaks down more substantially, but that's certainly fair. A lot of it to me seems more that teams that need "rhythm" to get their offense going struggle the most against UVA's style of play. It's stifling... Hell, factoring in AdjDE and Tempo, I mean it puts opposing teams at 51-52 points per 40 minutes... Obviously UNC-W well outside here, will be interested to see how this plays out through the tournament.
