Louisiana has a difficult situation with the amount of state-run universities it has.

Look at Iowa, for example. There's UI, ISU, and UNI. That's it. All their eggs in three baskets.

Louisiana has waaaaay more, and that's a lot of sprawl. LSU wants as much money as possible going into Baton Rouge. I can understand why.

Makes sense. The state pays for ULL, so ULL should have to run all name changes by the state. What's the problem?

even though when lsuno changed to uno, they only went through the lsu board of supervisors.
Nobody from the state objected because the name made total sense. To call it the University of New Orleans is accurate.

For USL to change to the University of Louisiana was a presumptuous, bullshite move by some folks with a little dick envy. To call it ULL is more accurate.

oh, so you're saying no two schools in the nation can have the same acronyms?

So I guess Southern Cal and South Carolina are screwed.

Or perhaps they changed the name because it is the largest campus within the University of Louisiana System.

Everyone arguing that the full name is UL Lafayette should also be raising hell that UT is not UT-Austin, etc. Many schools throughout the country do this... I don't get how this is so hard for some people to understand.

UT-Austin was the first "University of Texas," and it was always known colloquially as "Texas." All the others in the system were established decades later. ULL became a university in 1960 and has never been known as "The University of Louisiana."

There once was the University of Louisiana, but a guy named Paul Tulane donated a big chunk of dirt and change to it, and voila. Since then, no university has ever emerged in any way, shape, or form, as anything that Joe Blow would call "The University of Louisiana." For ULL to think of itself as Louisiana's version of UT-Austin or UVA or UNC-Chapel Hill is silly. ULL was basically vo-tech 50 years ago; these other universities are almost as old as their states.

Nobody calls it UL, and nobody will ever care. Stop wasting the money on the bumper stickers. Nobody's catching on.

Ooh La La is trying to position itself as Alabama to LSU's Auburn, when in reality they're at best Ohio University to LSU's tOSU.

Who gave them permision

And if they are so sure "permission" has been granted why in the hell do they put LOUISIANA'S RAGIN CAJUNS on their athletic uniforms?

Nobody has given them permission to simply change their name to UL. I lived in Lafayette for 8+ years, and the insecurity amongst the ULL faithful is unbelievable. If you drive by the gates of the school, you will see the words "University of Louisiana" on the brick wall. If you look even closer, you will see where they peeled off the words "at Lafayette" underneath. Big shocker, they are once again unsatisfied with the name of their school. Outside of Lafayette, nobody recognizes them as "UL". When they play on ESPN+, ESPN 8, etc. they are referred to as ULL or UL-Lafayette. Hell, none of the Louisiana media outside of Lafayette refers to them as UL.

Times Pic

Advocate

Shreveport Times

Houston Chronicle

ESPN

Sporting News

UL-Lafayette and UL-Monroe were created on equal footing, and the people in Lafayette have decided they should be referred to as the University of Louisiana. IF that's the case, is it simply UL vs. UL every time the schools from Lafayette and Monroe face off? Why aren't LSU-E and LSU-S simply not called LSU?

ETA: In all seriousness, it seems that it is an image issue. Fans of the university want to project an image of superiority to the other UL systems schools. Where is this superiority?

It's like that up here in Missouri. Mizzou blocked Southwest Missouri State from changing it's name to Missouri State for over 20yrs. The name change FINALLY went through. Mizzou was worried about Missouri State challenging their flagship status. There's a stupid agreement that Mo State can't have a law school and some other Master's programs to compete with Mizzou.
