In the south, it's baseball.

Im not so sure that's still the case, or will be for much longer. In Louisiana it's obviously still baseball, but around the rest of the south (and much of the United States honestly), college softball is growing more and more popular at a rapid pace.

Since the bat changes in baseball the sport has gotten more boring and grown stale. Same with the new venue in Omaha. I still enjoy relaxing at the park with a beer and watching a game that way, but college baseball is a very boring sport to watch on TV from your living room.

College softball on the other hand is a more fast paced and exciting game to watch.

This is a pussy thread. Women's basketball is on tv because of ratings. That's all.

Flippin' channels....came across 2 seed Stanford in a dog fight (no pun intended) with some low-seed team.

There was NOBODY at this game ...hosted by K St.

The few folks looked like some old geezers they bused over from Shoney's.

It is a joke.

It's not even the most popular women's sport.... now it is all over the espn family of channels...... cause you know, genders don't play sports. Athletes do

What did it look like for the Baylor game? I'd be willing to bet college baseball games at most parks where the home team isn't playing look similarly sparse.

I worked the Mountain West Baseball tournament one year where TCU hosted. They got knocked out and the final between San Diego State and New Mexico was played before maybe 100 people

It's a shame that title 9 killed so many of the other men's sports. LSU used to have great wrestling and boxing teams. If you ever look at the LSU hall of fame in the PMAC, half of the guys are boxers.

I suspect boxing would be gone anyway. Liability concerns (concussions).

Do you have a link for that? I'd be curious to see it. I can def see softball taking over women's bb.

Lacrosse is very popular in the mid-atlantic.

Hell, in 2015-16, only 17 NCAA women's basketball teams claimed to have an average attendance of more than 5k. 11 of those 16 averaged 6.5k or less, which tells me they really had less than 5k.

In 2015, 6 schools averaged more than 5,000 for baseball. LINK

In 2015, 13 schools averaged more than 5,000 for hockey. LINK

In 2015, 17 schools averaged more than 5,000 for women's basketball. LINK

No link

Analyzing and spinning TV ratings is part of what I basically do for a living.

What about capacity? We average over 100% for softball home games but only 64.5% for baseball.

How big of a gap do you think there is between women's bb and softball?

Does women's bb lead softball ratings both regular season and post-season?

Yes. ESPN has the rights to broadcast other sports like college baseball and hockey that would garner better ratings but chooses to elevate women's college bball instead. Seems legit.

There you go. By every matrix women's college hoops is more popular than college baseball. The fact that it is so popular here does not change that. ESPN has tried for years to push college baseball and people just don't watch, that's the bottom line.

baseball is regional, MLB and college. I love it, but that's the reality.

Really? Why is the WNBA around? Must be for the ratings right?

The last Harris Poll...

Had women's college basketball ahead of the WNBA and Men's tennis as America's most popular sports...

And it was #15 on the list.

Behind horse racing and women's soccer but ahead of men's tennis.

Women's tennis and golf were dead last...in that order. Behind bowling.

Not large

WBB is on TV more than Softball

Softball has less competition though. WBB goes up against the men and NBA. Softball really only competes with MLB and NBA playoffs

Shows you how far down the list college baseball is. And so what, we love it here and it makes us happy.

But there is a reality to that some can't accept.
