Thiem takes the first set 7-5. Is it possible the Great Great Rafael Nadal will take the L today?

Thiem wins. I predicted a soft tank from Rafa at Madrid or Rome. Madrid makes more sense because of the sketchy conditions. He did get a break back in the second, so it's not like he quit. I wouldn't read much into this because of what happened last year.

Does this mean that Federer moves back to No. 1 until Wimbledon?

Yes

Not sure

I know that Nadal can gain points by winning Rome, but not sure if it will be enough of a gain to overtake Fed. He can only match his points at RG.

Good word choice. I don’t want to start the whole homogenization conversation, but something is way off. Though 2200 feet is high... it’s not Quito high (9300). Either something was changed recently, or it’s always been unusual and Rafa covered it up by winning so much.
We have Anderson and Shapo in the SF of a clay masters, and Pliskova and Kvitova on the WTA side. Shapo is horrendous on normal clay. Yesterday Isner hit 32 aces in 3 sets. And I didn’t see today’s match, but Rafa’s shots weren’t even getting up over Diego’s shoulders, which is abnormal.

Also, Fed is playing Halle and Stuttgart, and Rafa is playing London before Wimbledon.

Rafa will be out for blood next week. He never says anything remotely cocky, but he was pretty clear after this match that it doesn't mean anything in terms of a pattern that Thiem is a threat. I think he is annoyed by the Madrid tournament, but can't say much because Spain.
You make a good point that goes to Cracka's post about conditions. Madrid may have juiced up the speed beyond the altitude. I don't know. But, I am not surprised anymore when I see big guys do well on clay. I used to think they wouldn't be able to move on the court. But, they offset movement deficiencies by handling high bounces easily and hitting through the court. See Soderling beating Rafa at RG and Isner taking him to five at RG.

Had no idea Soderling was 6’4.
Yeah, I can see a dialed-in Isner having a tiny shot of pulling the upset, although I would prefer an Anderson type with a little more ground game and better movement.

Thiem is through to the finals. Zverev and Shapo up now.

Quote from Anderson (before today’s loss so he wasn’t bitching):
“So, you know, of course I'd say hard court is my favorite surface. I've always felt pretty comfortable on the clay. I think especially here in Madrid with a little bit of altitude, the ball really goes through the court a lot. I don't think it's as noticeable just on center court because it's so big, so people can return from further back, whereas if you go to the outside courts, where the fence is a little bit closer, you really see the difference. I mean, even times it's faster than a hard court.”
Looks like some people took that to mean that center court was slower than the others, but it doesn’t sound like he’s saying that. Ace numbers seem to have gone down big time for everyone on center court, though... probably for the reason he mentioned.

Sascha takes Madrid for his third Masters title.

I guess both of these guys will play Rome since they can get a Tuesday or Wednesday start, although Zverev is coming off back-to-back titles.

At 21. Roger was 23ish when he got his 3rd. Now I'm not saying what you think I'm saying, but, you know, I’m just saying.

Alex is having a really nice clay court season
I'm totally good with Rafa losing to Thiem. He needed to lose so people would stop talking about the streak. Also, gives him a half week's rest going into Rome, which I expect him to win now.
I believe he'll reclaim the #1 ranking if he wins Rome.
Re: the Madrid conditions. Whoever said that 2,200 isn't that high is correct. Really shouldn't make that big a difference. What else might be peculiar about the clay, you got me. Maybe nothing. I try to avoid getting all conspiracy theory-y about surface speeds. How do they even make clay fast? Is that a thing?

The best chance, I think to beat Rafa at Roland Garros this year, since Federer is not playing and Djokovic is not playing his best, is John Isner, in my opinion. This is due to John's playing style and the ability for John to disrupt Rafa's rhythm due to his playing style.
I think Alex Zverev would have a better shot the way he's been serving.
