In tennis there will be mostly Federers and a couple Nadals

In golf, they will all say Tiger Woods

another great point, you can just respond with this to any other argument and be done with it

Your point about no individual will show up and just gain 2 seconds on their swim time is awesome. When they get into the pool, they pretty much know who is going to win. They already pretty much know (within .05 seconds) of the swim times of the guys. No guy is going to hit the NOS and soar past Phelps.

Again he is good and it helps, but the concept that golf is more difficult to win because the field is larger is a fallacy since Tiger CAN afford to mess up.

Isn't that right up the Phelps side's alley?

"When they get into the pool, they pretty much know who is going to win." = Dominance

tiger's greatness is that he has dominated in every stage of his life. to win 3 us juniors and then 3 us am's in a row is sick. then to win 4 majors in a row, hold or tie all the scoring records in the majors and win 65 tournaments in 11 years in today's game is absolutely unheard of. golf is not a game which is suppose to be dominated like that.

also if you are the best swimmer, you are probably are going to win the race. when was the last time a swimmer who was the eight seed in the race won it? rarely do you see even the third best in the race win. in golf, anyone can win and does win. shaun micheel, ben curtis, todd hamilton all won majors recently. name me some swimmers that won gold that had no chance to win or were ranked 193rd in the world??

Great point

that's what i was saying though. you can't point to phelp's records or winning pctg to say that he's dominating. all these races basically say.

yup still the fastest.

he's dominant because he's the best.

No. This argument goes back to the 151 format is tougher than tennis match argument.

The fact that Tiger(or any other golf) don't have to go out and win every single day is part of the reason that size of field is not equal to difficulty.

Also I still want to know what we are asking the other players.

LIke the guy said earlier:

When they race in the pool, they know 1 of 3 guys is going to win. Those other 5 guys just happen to be the best guys in their country.

When they tee it up, there are more than just 3 guys that can win the tourney, but when Tiger plays, guess who ends up winning it.

Exactly, he is the best right now. Guess what is going to happen in 4/8/maybe 12 years when the olympics take place again. Another person is going to destroy the WR times. In all the events. Not just the events Phelps swims. After Tiger wins 25+ majors you can set that record in stone. IT WILL NEVER BE BROKEN.

ask fellow golfers who the best golfer is and 100% say Tiger, unless jokingly saying themselves

ask tennis players who best tennis player is and most will say federer but some will say nadal

Once again, no one has refuted Eddy Merckx. If it’s all about field size, then Merckx went up against fields of 181 riders. He won five Tours, and failed to win more because he was attacked by a fan in the middle of a race (what other athlete other than Seles can say that?). He won all three Grand Tours AND he won them all in one year AND he’s the only person to win the sprinter’s title in all three Grand Tours as well (he also won the climber’s category in all three Tours). He won 250 major races, a record that no one has even gotten to the halfway point of. He wore the Yellow Jersey for 112 days, a record, and he won 33 stages of the Tour, also a record.

He couldn’t afford to have a bad day. He won sprints. He won climbs. He won one day races, he won month-long races. He was the absolute gold standard of individual dominance of a man’s own sport.

By the criteria endorsed in this thread, Merckx is clearly the greatest of all time.

Not fair.

That's like saying that you went and asked NFL players who best WR was in Jerry Rice's last year and using the fact that some people didn't say him against him.

Federer is close to the end of most Tennis player's career. Its no virtue of Tiger's nor vice of Federer's that you can play golf longer than you can Tennis at a high level.

A better question is, "Who has been the most dominant player over the last 5-6 years."

Totally fair. you ask people who is the best WR in history, all of them will not say Jerry Rice. thats our point. You proved it for us.
