The origin of "Baby Cakes"

I guess I'm a cultural moron. Every time I hear this team mentioned, I feel embarrassed for the people of New Orleans. Before the Z's took on this new name, I was simply unaware of the term and what it implied.
When teams (for generations) typically choose a mascot that has powerful, swift or ominous overtones or even references to regional customs or crafts, how in God's name did such a feminized/sissified name enter the picture? If you had a list of words NOT to use, "Baby" and "Cakes" would be at the top of the list. I don't get it...

Minor league baseball teams pick wacky mascots so douches buy their hats and other merch. Just like how every cool cat used to buy South Carolina bar hats because they said COCKS.

It’s a minor league team, they have to use gimmicks and be fun to draw interest.The name is so “dumb” that it draws interest (like this thread) and sells merch for being funny/ironic, etc.

It's pretentious to try to make people think there are 1000 lakes in LA but the Lakers are there still, even out of Minnesota.

I’ve heard of a king cake before and I know what the king cake baby is. I’ve never once heard of a baby cake or anyone refer to it as a baby cake until this marketing team they hired from the west coast I believe decided this was such an amazing name and kept pushing it the whole process. Nothing against the logos but the name is stupid as shite

No one in New Orleans called anything a "baby cake." You didn't miss anything. It's completely made up bullshite and was the result of a phony name the team contest.

From what I can tell, the fans still aren't banging down the doors at the Shrine on Airline to get in to see the team. I went to one game and it was just me, about 500 other people, and lots of tumbleweed.

And yes, there was, supposedly a contest. I saw links and references, and TONS of derision. Yet Baby Cakes won, anyway.
The logo, the colors, the fonts are all pretty decent. Only the name and the reasoning are stupid as all get out.

New Orleans was 33rd in MiLB in attendance this year. Averaged 5554 a game which was up 8% from 2016. That was better than 9 other teams in AAA.

Oh frick off. Who the hell follows out of state minor league baseball teams. They're supposed to be goofy and fun for the local "fan bases"
