This isn't about what's legally permissible. This about a culture of censoring certain political views while promoting others.

you don't see the difference between an on the field demonstration that the NFL didn't sign off on vs a commercial in retaliation to that demonstration on the sports biggest stage?

It's not like the players protested in form of a commercial that needed NFL approvement. If they had, the NFL would've likely shot it down.

The NFL tries to have it both ways.

When the players protest they try to say 'We're powerless to stop them! They have freedom of speech!'

But then the rest of the time the NFL has no problem crushing any speech they don't like, be it names on shoes or ads on tv.

Exactly. And this board acts like we have no right to criticize them for it.

You have every right to criticize them for the decision. You just look dumb when you try to make it a freedom of speech argument.

Which is why, in advertising/business, it used to be a universal rule that you didn't use controversial platforms because the potential of alienating consumer base.

But once you open that door, criticism of it is fair game.

you are allowed to criticize the NFL all you want, that is actually free speech.

I'm 100% certain the NFL would reject a Super Bowl program ad from a BLM group that said #PleaseKneel too.

FWIW, this would have been an ad in the physical program.

NFL is more Pro military than any other sport in America.

A million Ads for the Marines during football games; gigantic flags sprawled across the field with honor guards...B2 bombers or jets flying over.

Annoucnments before games "to honor our military and America" please welcome...

They can't stop players from kneeling but apart from that NFL is just Corporate Corporate and will always have their Military-America Pomp and Circumstance before games.

This wouldn't even be an issue if the NFL or sports in general hadn't started all this Pomp before games and singing and flags - players would have nothing to protest...they would justy have to play the fricking game.

And the NFL is the most pro military sport I have ever seen.

Doesn't really change anything. Only difference is it's something the NFL has even more control over.

Never once made a 1st Amendment argument so I don't know why you keep bringing it up. This is about PR and optics. The NFL brought this upon themselves when they aligned their brand towards one side.

It's just become a buzzword for people to throw around in arguments without any actual understanding of what 'freedom of speech' actually entails.

are we not in agreement that the NFL would be doing the same exact thing if the ad wanted to promote kneeling during the anthem?

Did anyone with AMVETS actually think the NFL would be okay with printing this in their program?

Maybe they should take out a TV commercial instead.

Probably not. But knew this was an easy story to tell and get 10000 times more publicity than a program ad ever would.

The people upset about the kneelers are the ones who won't let it die because it plays so well as a political ploy for their party

What post did I quote? My first response in this was by itself. I didn't agree with the group or their argument. I only illustrated how bad the NFL is at handling the optics/PR of the situation.
