The NFL rejected an ad from a veterans group that wanted to publish in its Super Bowl program.

The full page ad from AMVETS would have featured a military honor guard holding an American flag and the text #PleaseStand at the top of the page. After many NFL players chose to kneel in protest during the singing of the National Anthem before football games, the ad called on players to stand. It also solicited donations.

The NFL said it rejected the ad because it made a "political statement."

In a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dated January 22, AMVETS National Commander Marion Polk said that "freedom of speech works both ways."

"We respect the rights of those who choose to protest, as these rights are precisely what our members have fought -- and in many cases died -- for," Polk wrote. "But imposing corporate censorship to deny the same rights to those veterans who have have secured it for us all is reprehensible and totally beyond the pale."

Freedom of Speech means the NFL can't decide what they want in their program?

So, players have the right to express their views, but the people who serve to protect that right don't deserve to express their views?

Neither group is getting arrested for their views. Freedom of speech is on the up and up

The NFL rejecting it might be better advertisement than it'd have been on air.

You really think the NFL is going to air an ad that takes a shot right at them?

This isn't about what's legally permissible. This about a culture of censoring certain political views while promoting others.

One group is employed by the company and has a set of skills that most don't possess. The other is an organization looking to advertise with the corporation that probably has a long list of choices for the program.

i manage a business. if an organization that we didnt want to sell ad space to wanted to buy from us, we'd tell them "no" and that would be that.

If you've seen NFL commercials as of late, it's pretty obvious they're trying hard to appeal to the demographic that would support kneeling, and probably be offended by the commercial

It’s their choice to make. It’s within their rights

But it is terrible PR. They’re just so bad with the PR aspect of their business.

The NFL tries to have it both ways.

When the players protest they try to say 'We're powerless to stop them! They have freedom of speech!'

But then the rest of the time the NFL has no problem crushing any speech they don't like, be it names on shoes or ads on tv.

Which is why, in advertising/business, it used to be a universal rule that you didn't use controversial platforms because the potential of alienating consumer base.

But once you open that door, criticism of it is fair game.

And if you want to align yourself on one side as an institution/business, that's fine. Just don't talk out the other side of your mouth as being non-political and get bent out of shape about it when people call you out on it
