There is a good chance Jalen Hurts may have to fly solo on quarterback sneaks next season.

The league’s competition committee is expected to take a hard look at the Tush Push play that was so effective for Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles this season.

Hurts had 10 rushing first downs in Sunday’s 38-35 Super Bowl LVII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Six of them came on quarterback sneaks. On each one of them, the Eagles lined up two or three players behind Hurts and then they pushed him forward after the ball was snapped. Hurts converted an impressive 36 of 40 quarterback sneaks this season.

Pushing a ball carrier to help move him forward has been legal in the NFL since 2005 and in the college game since 2013. But amazingly, the Eagles really have been the first team to weaponize it. After getting a season-long look at it, the league doesn’t like what it sees.

Fullscreen
“I think the league is going to look at this, and I’d be shocked if they don’t make a change,’’ said Dean Blandino, a rules analyst for Fox Sports and The 33rd Team, who was the NFL’s vice president of officiating from 2013 to 2017.

The league’s competition committee will meet in two weeks at the league scouting combine in Indianapolis and then again prior to the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix in late March. The Tush Push will be on their agenda. Any rule change recommendations by the committee would be voted on by the owners in Arizona.

“I was talking to (Denver Broncos coach) Sean Payton during Sunday’s game, and he said we’re going to do this every time next season if they don’t take it out,’’ Blandino said.

“It amounts to a rugby scrum. The NFL wants to showcase the athleticism and skill of our athletes. This is just not a skillful play. This is just a tactic that is not an aesthetically pleasing play, and I think the competition committee is going to take a look at it.’’

Lol offensive players showing they’re stronger than defensive players isn’t considered athletic

Joke league

Who gives a shite. It’s effective and allows for some exciting gambles throughout the game.

How about you let defenses adapt to it instead of just eliminating it.

I don't find the shotgun aesthetically pleasing. Remove it please.

Power I only.

This is like the NBA with the hack-a-shaq foul rules

Even though it's a very strategic part of the game, let's remove it because people that rarely watch the sport might not like it.

Just what the NFL needs... more rules.

Why don't they just make it 7 on 7 flag football if that's what they want.

Good… if you don’t get a handle on this some offensive geek will scheme a way to make every running play come with this tactic

That's called competition. Get better at your scheme if theirs works

Any push should be blown dead as the runner's forward progress is done. If they have to be pushed, the fricker is stopped.

I'm cool with them banning it. Eagles O-line is very good, so I understand why they do it. The Chiefs O-line is just as good if not better but there's no way in frick we are running another QB sneak again after Mahomes dislocated his Kneecap against the Broncos a few years ago.

This is how I view it. If you allow offensive players without the ball to push the ballcarrier, then you have to get rid of forward progress. They should have never legalized it.

I do agree with this. I don't mind the pushing, but once the momentum is halted it's over right there. Same as any other play.

To be fair, I am in the middle regarding the whole rugby scrum. It is sort of fun to watch at the end of a running play, but I always breathe a sigh of relief afterward and am sort of amazed when there are no serious injuries.

Cudos to the eagles for figuring this out, but I hope they ban it. I dont want to watch someone convert 36 of 40 on a down that makes or breaks a game.

JJ Watt said a few years ago that it's now impossible to stop a QB sneak in today's NFL...

Once they took the Bush-Push tenfold and lined-up two huge linebackers behind the QB.

Good. It was a dumb rule to legalize to begin with.

If you need someone to push you from behind to continue moving forward, by definition, your progress is stopped and the play should be over.

I have never liked it, and I have never seen it flagged even when it was illegal. I lost a big FB game on it once as a coach. Probably the best thing in the long run, though, because we beat them in a rematch for the championship.
