Jerry Rice
Just out of curiousity, why would you throw Jerry Rice in there with the likes of Bo Jackson and Mike Vick???
And why didn't you throw in a guy like, say, Anthony Munoz?

Because I did it off the top of my head in 4 mins.......Jerry Rice probably wasn't the greatest athlete but his work ethic was unparrelled and I consider work ethic part of the definition when describing the greatest of all time.

i don't understand all the tiger love on the greatest athlete debate..
have you watched any golf in the last 12 years?? he is not the greatest athlete ever but he is arguably the greatest sports figure ever to live. it is difficult to comprehend how good the guy is.

maybe i am in the minority here but i dont think football players in general are as good as athletes as gymnasts, wrestlers, and other combat sport athletes.

i remember watching a baseball game(WBC i think), and they had introduced someone who was drafted by the NFL, NBA, and MLB. i forgot who it was now.
maybe it was Eddie Murray(dodgers)?

I have to put Carl Lewis, Bo Jackson and Tiger Woods atop.
Ok one was a FAST runner and another one is a good golfer. Why would they be considered GREAT athletes. Now I can see Bo Jackson because he was good in both football and baseball. Tiger and Carl only played one sport.

i don't know if this has been deteremined yet, but is this thread about an "athlete" meaning:
1. the best at his position/sport?
2. the most athletic performer ever?
that's a HUGE difference

Charlie Ward?
He was also the only Heisman winner to play in the NBA. In 1993, Charlie Ward won the James E. Sullivan Award from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) as the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Though Ward did not play baseball in college, he was drafted as a pitcher by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1993 free agent draft and by the New York Yankees in 1994. An avid tennis player, Ward also shined in the Arthur Ashe Amateur Tennis Tournament in 1994.

Right, Jordan had a really great baseball career and Woods is a golfer.
Bo Jackson was great at football and baseball.

yeah dyanmic flexibility, grip and static strength, and the ability to contort themselves in crazy position doesn't make gymnasits great athletes.
