#1 I am not arguing with anyone who is talking about defense. Go read back through the thread and you'll notice me laughing at people instantly insulting my intelligence and calling me a "moron" for questioning Jones.

You were laughing at people for saying he is the greatest defensive outfielder ever, when there is certainly a case to be made for him.

#2 The thread wasn't supposed to be about defense. The announcers said best "outfielder" of his generation. Which I do find a big problem with.

Yeah, and everyone in this thread pretty much agreed with you that he wasn't the best all around and you were still arguing with people like they were saying he was.

That is crazy. I must be misreading the quote. I can't find the word "better" in there anywhere.

Once again, I fancy a complete outfielder more than a defensive one. Ichiro has had remarkable fielding numbers over the past decade plus he has one of the strongest arms I've ever seen. Watching him field balls in BP is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

I'd rather Brees as my QB more than Brady. Does that mean I think Brees is better? No, not at all.
Not even going to bother anymore.
ETA:

I really can't believe some of what I'm reading. Griffey is hands down, without question a first ballot HOFer. Jones will probably make it eventually but one could easily argue that Griffey is one of the best who has ever played the game. Ever. If he didn't get injured in Cinci, he could have made an even stronger argument

No one is saying that Jones is a better all around player than Griffey. Better defender, yes. Better all around player, no.

Awesome! I was losing IQ points reading your posts.

Once again, to clarify with anyone who still wants to argue about defensive stats with me. I am not arguing that Jones isn't a great defensive outfielder. I am not arguing that Ichiro or Griffey are better defensive fielders than him. Sorry if it came off that way.

The thread subject was best outfielder of his generation. Multiple people in this thread have agreed with this statement and that is what I find fault with.

Nobody has said jones was better than Griffey, all-around. NOBODY.

True. I've learned to ignore him but sometimes I can't help it.

In certain context, when people say "best outfielder" they are talking defense only. I'm sure that's what the ESPN announcers were talking about.

Well they should have specified if they meant defense.

He was batting when ESPN said it FWIW. Wasn't like he had just made a diving catch or anything.

Also, I'm not a Braves hater at all and have absolutely nothing against Andruw.

Well that's a lot less exciting. I'd still be willing to argue that Junior was better defensively it'd be worthless. There's no defensive stats that definitively point to one guy being better than the other. We could watch highlight reels and make arguments, but it would be one opinion vs another

Also, just took a peak at some stats. Ichiro played 1 real full season at CF (155 games), and his fielding % (.998) for that single season was higher than any single one of Andruw Jones' fielding %s in his career. Ichiro had 1 error that season. Ridiculous.

So there actually might be some debate there.

once again, not saying Ichiro is better than Jones defensively

I have no problem at all with the opinion that Griffey was better than jones defensively. It is a valid opinion, even if it's wrong. Now arguing that ichiro is a better defensive oufielder than jones is just plain ridiculous. Nothing against ichiro, it's just a testament as to how good jones was.

You did earlier though.

And fielding percentage is not indicative of defensive prowess. There are all sorts of variables like range and throwing errors, which can happen through no fault of the thrower.

I said I would take him before Jones. Which I will. He has been one of my favorite players in the league over the past decade. Like I said, he is an incredible fielder and his arm strength is virtually unmatched. The videos of him catching BP behind his back are awesome and I've got a soft spot for him.

I'm not against the notion that Andruw is an overall better fielder though.

ETA His range factor/9 inn that season was 2.90%. Jones only eclipsed that twice. Pretty impressive for his only season at the position.

I'm not sure why you are quoting that. Mays, Clemente and Junior were all great fielders. You even just admitted you have no problem with someone saying Junior is a better fielder than Jones.

ETA you quoted my response to this:

quote:

If you're gonna come in here saying ichiro is better than jones defensively

I'm just confused now. Where in that quote did I even mention Ichiro?

Sorry, quoted the wrong post

Here ya go...

quote:

Because he isn't. Ichiro has been just as good a fielder in less years. Plus he has the complete package. Incredible arm, great fielder and great hitter. Can cover just as much ground (if not more).
