Manny Ramirez back as hitting consultant.

I think this worked out well last year. Good for Manny, good for the Cubes.

Not that I'm aware of...why do you say that?

he might...but his service time in MLB means he no longer qualifies as a prospect since he won't have rookie status in 2015.

per Bruce, Bryant has been asked to work in the outfield this spring, at least some.

The skeptic in me thinks this lends itself to a 'well he's learning a new position' retort to Boras' demand that bryant break camp with the cubs.

Realistically though, it could just be where he's going to end up.

Pipeline Perspectives: Cubs boast top collection of prospects

quote:

The crown jewel of the Cubs' system is third baseman Kris Bryant (No. 2 on the Top 100), who led the Minors in homers (43), slugging (.661) and OPS (1.098) while reaching Triple-A in his first full pro season. He has more usable power and more opposite-field pop than any prospect in the game, and he will unleash it on big league pitchers as soon as Chicago gives him the opportunity. Service-time considerations may delay Bryant's debut until the end of April, though he would be the club's Opening Day starter if talent were the only consideration.

Bryant isn't the only rookie slugger who will bolster Chicago's lineup. Right fielder Jorge Soler (No. 22) has huge raw power to all fields as well, and he showed it by homering off Mat Latos in his first Major League at-bat and going deep five times in 24 games with the Cubs at the end of last season.

While it's unclear where Addison Russell (No. 5) will fit in Chicago, he's yet another prospect with explosive bat speed and the ability to hit for plus average and power. He's a better defender at shortstop than three-time All-Star Starlin Castro or Baez, and he also could surface at second base.

Another potential middle-of-the-order bat, Kyle Schwarber (49) batted .344 and slammed 18 homers in 72 games in his pro debut last summer. The Cubs will try to make him a catcher, which may be a stretch, but he has the offensive upside to be an All-Star even if he winds up in left field.

Beyond that fearsome foursome, Chicago also has several more intriguing position players, including sweet-swinging outfielders Albert Almora (No. 57) and Billy McKinney and precocious 18-year-old shortstop Gleyber Torres. And though the Cubs' hitting prospects grab most of the headlines, the system has some notable pitchers as well.

Makes the most sense. I don't buy the Tommy La Sella stuff starting as anything more than pushing baez. I'm guessing they're hoping olt at 3b, until bryant comes up, or if he is OF, then olt sticks. I suppose it could be la stella at 2b, baez at SS/3b castro at ss/3b.

I just have a reluctance to mess with castro right now. before he got hurt last year he was playing awesome.

I would think Alcantara would start at third over Olt.

To be honest...he just completely slipped my mind. As 'super utility guy' he could certainly fill in.

hell i guess la stella could play 3b too.

I just think they will look for ways to get Alcantara in the lineup. 3b might be that spot until Bryant gets the nod.

I've been doing some reading on the 3B situation. Bryant has to wait 21 days (or maybe 9 games I think?) for the Cubs to have team control over him for an additional year. Or, rather, postponing his "clock" for this year.

What BN seems to think is that 3B will be an amalgamation of bodies--Olt, Alcantara, La Stella and Baez--for that time. Personally, I think Olt will get the first crack at it with La Stella getting the fallback option AB's until Bryant is called up. That's just my logic and nothing more. But I have to think the Cubs want Olt to be the guy to break camp and they can lip service him sticking and Bryant moving to outfield, but the truth of the matter is Bryant has more value at 3B and is the long term answer there. HOWEVER, Olt at 3B and Bryant in LF would mean Olt has made GREAT strides at the plate and the Cubs lineup just got surprisingly more potent.

The thing about Bryant being asked to get time in the outfield is just Joe Maddon being Joe Maddon. He preaches versatility and it comes as no surprise to me that Bryant was asked to shag flies in the outfield.

I agree with all that, and it started before maddon with the cubs but he certainly hammers the point home. With that said, we've also got to be a little honest with ourselves and be open to the very real possibility that he's not serviceable enough at 3b to stay there.

if bryant can't stick i'd but 3b likelihood as Olt (assuming he can make contact with the ball), la stell then mendy.

I'm definitely okay with Bryant playing in the outfield because his bat plays anywhere. The book on Bryant seems to be that he has a great arm at 3B, but he's a bit "rangy" in that his frame lends itself to be a little difficult getting in front of balls on routine plays. If that starts being a chronic glaring problem, then so be it. But his first position will be 3B with the Cubs.

If he doesn't make it at 3B defensively, I think that opens up the internal option of moving him to LF and aswering 3B with Javier Baez moving over there. By that time you have to think Addison Russell will be called up and Starlin Castro moves to 2B and then Russell at SS.

In the event this all happens before Addison Russell gets called up, Alcantara takes over at 2B, Baez to 3B and Starlin stays at SS.

Exactly...it's not like 3b drives his value. Kid will hit anywhere.

That too and if he won't "outgrow" the position. Personally I'd say cross that bridge when you come to it, but I'm pay the cubs not the other way around so what do I know?

Works for me. In my dream scenario though we move castro over there who stops making lackadaisical errors, baez at short who then destroys the ball and plays great defense, trade him...bring up russel win 8 world series in a row.

I don't know why, but I cannot get on board with Castro moving to 3B. Unless he has this Manny Machado type transformation defensively, I think he's best suited for 2B. Again, I'm no expert. And I think I'm in the minority in this one.
