Markakis officially announced his retirement today
quote:
After a 15-year career with the Orioles and Braves, Nick Markakis is retiring from baseball, telling The Athletic (subscription required) he wants to spend more time at home with his wife and three sons.
“I just think it’s my time,” Markakis said. “My No. 1 decision and my main focus on this is obviously my kids and my family. I’ve been fortunate enough to do this for a very long time and not many people get to do what I’ve gone through. I’m thankful for every second and every minute.”

According to Jon Heyman, the Braves are potentially a finalist for Maikel Franco. Would be a good bat to have and is decent at 3B. Not sure what the means for Austin Riley or Jake Lamb though.

Good move for him and the Braves. Markakis had a very, very nice career and supposedly was a great teammate.

Check out this overlay of Ian Anderson's fastball & changeup. Same arm slot and same plane, until it gets to the plate.
Ian Anderson fastball/change overlay
Christ! Just absolute filth! That isn't even fair.
Out of the 3(him, Maple Maddux & Fried), he just might end up being the best of the bunch. Which is scary if you think about it b/c the other 2 are damn good in their own right. Fried would be an ace on this staff if not for Soroka and on most staffs in MLB.

The #Braves today optioned RHP Jacob Webb and RHP Kyle Wright to the alternate training site. The club now has 40 players in major league camp.

There's no way we can keep all of Wright, Touki, and Newcomb in the organization for much longer.

For all you Riley doubters, which there are quite a few(why IDK), he hit 2 HR's today against the Pirates.

Switch these two. Touki has an option and Jackson doesn't. I don't like it but that's how it'll go.
Maybe replace Jackson with one of Edwards or Jones, but I don't think it'll be Touki.

Lamb (Probably)
Lamb is a lock, IMO.
I'm not sure how they'll sort out the bench, but I would rather see Sandoval or Kipnis over Camargo.

I’ll admit I haven’t followed spring training much this year outside of box scores, but I’m really surprised they optioned Webb. Thought he was a lock for sure. And it’s not like he did poorly. He gave up 1 ER over 6.0 IP in ST this year.

Why'd I get downvoted on my Riley post? It's like you guys want him to fail just to prove those right who have wrongly called him a bust.

I think the Riley doubters will be eating a lot of crow at the end of the season.

Dude we get it. You like Austin Riley.
This coming from someone who doesn't feel strongly about him one way or the other.

No one here is cheering for Riley to fail. I think most of us expect that he will eventually put it together and be a solid player. But the reality is he is the weakest link on a team with championship aspirations, and we can't necessarily wait for him to put it together in year 4 or five, especially if there are upgrades that could be had without giving up too much.
Also, you're trying to act like this one game is your vindication, It was one good game in spring training against a back of the rotation pitcher on the worst team in the league. Riley has still been striking out too much, and not walking enough. And those were his first two extra-base hits this spring. I would love for Riley to live up to his potential, but he still has a lot to prove

Riley has only had 462 at bats at the major league level. That's 3/4 of a season worth of at bats. For comparison purposes, it was nearly 1000 before Dansby hit his stride. I think Riley is doing very well for this early in his career, and I'm happy to have him at 3B for this team.

I like Riley and think he will be a good player. He has immense power and plays a good third base. That said, this team is in a championship window right now. If he would have to be included with Waters, Langeliers, and Wright or Wilson to get someone like Jose Ramirez, you wish Riley well and move on.

I didn't say it was vindication, but people on here and elsewhere are already calling him a bust when he hasn't even played a full season's worth of games yet is over-reactionary at best and ignorant at worst. You can't make a determination either way until he has at least a year or two of AB's. Can he stand to make improvements? Sure. But it doesn't mean you give up on him this early. And I think having Chipper in his ear will help him immensely. Chipper has made Riley his pet project.
We all have to be patient.
