Time to get rid of Markakis now.
Posted on 7/30/16 at 6:18 pm to volfan30
Yeah I didn't like Markakis from the beginning but I expected better than a .265 average.

The best part of the Kemp trade is his contract is a year shorter than Olivera.

Yeah but it's also more money. Granted that's before taking into account whatever the Padres are going to pay. Which means less money to spend.
I hope that the money end of it turns out good enough to make me feel good about this deal.

Sources: Padres sending $10-12 million to Braves in the Kemp-Olivera trade.
This seems about right.
$15M+ would have made trade clear win for Braves less than $10M would have made it clear loss.

What does that make our portion to Kemp total?

So many bad hot takes in this thread.

Kemp is 7th in the NL (14th overall) in HR and 6th (11th) I'm RBIs.
I realize those stats don't take into account the overall player, but they do have some meaning.
Looks like the Braves got rid of a player owed $28 million who had no (or even negative) value and got someone who could help the lineup or bring value via trade.
As others have mentioned, kemp could be flipped to an AL team looking for a DH. Braves could throw in some cash with him and probably get a decent return.

The #Padres actually saving more than $30 million in Kemp deal. The $10.5M they send to Braves is actually from their original #Dodgers deal
Yikes. Coppy got bent over here.

Really no need to take on Matt Kemp at a $54M cost when you could just cut Olivera and eat the $29M. Why would you take on $25M for Matt Kemp?
If I told you this morning that the Braves were going to DFA Hector Olivera today and then and sign Matt Kemp to a 3 year, $25.5M deal this offseason, you would have signed up for it?

He is not a good baseball player at all. Doesn't make any sense to commit to him at this point in the rebuild.
The Padres paid $30M today for him to go away forever.

Just because he's not that good anymore doesn't mean Coppy got "bent over". We got rid of a useless, expensive player who hits women for a proven veteran who can at least provide some pop in our lineup. Odds are he won't even be with us by the end of next year. Possible best case scenario is he returns to a better form and we flip him to an AL team looking for a DH, we eat some salary and get a good prospect or more for him.

Could have done this for $29M.

This is worth an additional $25M of payroll flexibility?

Obviously this is ideal, but if he continues to perform as he has in San Diego, we just eliminated future flexibility.
Coppy made a horrendous trade last July that most people thought was bad at the time and this feels like he is trying to salvage it somehow rather than just eating his losses.

Volfan decided it was a bad trade before the details were released. He's not going to go backward on his reasoning.
It doesn't have to be one sided for both teams to come out ahead. Braves unload a backloaded contract for an outfielder that won't play anymore MLB games. They acquire an OF with power that provided positive WAR in the meantime for the same $ for less years.
Ultimately, it's similar money restructured in a manner that provides production in our current lineup. It's something from nothing.

The trade was bad but it's far from horrendous. Upgrading your adjectives doesn't make up for the fact that Wood isn't a good pitcher anymore and Peraza isn't a MLB baseball player.
It's not his best trade but it has minimal impact on out current roster and system. You know that - don't be absurd.

We still have plenty of cap flexibility, this really doesn't change things that much. I'm certainly not saying its a great or even good trade, meh at best, but certainly nothing to cry about unless you're one of those people who likes to bitch about every single move Coppy makes.
