The #Braves today recalled LHP Danny Young to Atlanta and placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list, backdated to May 6, with a strained left forearm.

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that while an MRI did not raise concern about Tommy John surgery for Fried, the Braves still don’t expect this to be a short-term absence. Fried will be shut down from throwing while his forearm heals, and while there’s no concrete timeline, it’ll likely be long enough that he’ll need to build back up from scratch.

Well that's a bummer

Calling bullshite. He may not need it now, and he may come back, but these things seem almost inevitable. Terrible time for the Braves, obviously, as we already don’t have a 5th starter with the Wright injury, but there’s no replacing a Max Fried.

The timing sucks more for Fried, though. If he rehabs for a couple months, comes back, blows his elbow and winds up having TJ anyway, it will sideline him for all of his free agent season next year.

Maybe it’s not that bad, and he can do the stem cell therapy and rehab and hold it off for a couple of years. But this news seems quite ominous at this point.

We made need to kick the tires and see about a dependable free agent. Someone that can give us 5 innings and at least a bandaid.

I'd trust two of Soroka, Dodd and Shuster to do this more than Madison Bumgarner and the like.

We do need Strider and Elder to continue being aces though to really not feel the affects of this.

With most of our position players locked up for the foreseeable future, I think Grissom is expendable. May be able to use him in a trade to boost the pitching staff if necessary.

I think it would be dumb as hell to punt on Grissom for a rental.

If we are to make a trade, I think we'd be better off parting with Shuster and/or Dodd considering that it's only a matter of time before Murphy, AJSS and Ritchie pass them up.

I can see trying to get something for Soroka as well. Our farm is stacked with pitching... hitting, not so much.

Dodd is out of options. If they bring him up to not directly replace a guy moved to the IL—and they didn’t bring him up to replace Fried—then he has to stay up all year, right? Or be susceptible to waivers? I’m not 100% sure how that works.

And Soroka hasn’t been very good lately and hasn’t really earned a call up. They may do it out of necessity and hope a light switches, but if he can’t consistently get AAA hitters out yet, I’m not very confident in him getting big league guys out yet.

It’s gonna be Shuster, and maybe they throw a hail mary and try a young guy that is dominating in a lower level, but not expected to be in the bigs for another year or 2. Maybe he turns out to be the next Strider.

Speaking of, he may need to change how he pitches a bit. He’s unbelievable now, but having a little trouble going deep because guys are fouling off his fastball with 2 strikes more and driving his pitch count up. They eventually strike out, but it’s taking too many pitches to finish a lot of them. No big deal if you have 5 starters who can go deep, but right now, we’re depending on the pen to throw way too many innings. Iglesias coming back is clutch, but they can’t keep up this pace and be fresh for the stretch and playoffs. We need to add a piece or 2, but with the expanded playoffs, nobody’s ready to come off a good pen piece yet, and when they do, they’ll be in such short supply and high demand, that it’s gonna be really expensive. Could bring up a young guy or 2 a year or 2 earlier than planned here too, I guess.

Good thing is we are off to the best start in Braves history and the Mets are sucking, so we have a little rope to be able to tread water for a while. Desperately need Riley to get going and Ozuna to stay….playable—the offense is gonna have to win some higher scoring games and carry us a bit.

Btw, I said it earlier, but Elder and Morton are low key early MVPs of the team so far.

Huh?

You can't use multiple options in a season.

If he’s headed for the knife they need to do it ASAP.

I'm not suggesting using Grissom to get a rental. If he gets traded, it had better be for something substantial (and not that horrid return AA got for Henry-Malloy).

It would take more than Grissom to get this done, but I do think Cleveland would trade Shane Bieber for the right price. He's not a free agent until 2025.

Hell, kick the tires on MadBum.

I don't think Fried's injury is as bad as we're fearing. Kyle Wright, on the other hand, might be done.

We'd have to trade the whole farm to get Bieber

i just think its a tall ask to leave maybe the next 2 months of the season to basically 4 - 5 rookies and Charlie.

Strider
Charlie
Elder
Dodd
Schuster
Soroka

As it stands now, these are our options

It’s a tall ask to ask MadBum to not give up 5 runs in 2 IP

You right. I am not suggesting MadBum.

There are others available.

We're probably looking at 60 days.

What Broski means is that options work by the season. If you send someone up and down once that counts as an option year, but you can send them up and down up to a certain amount during the season and only count towards one option year.

It used to be an unlimited amount, but as of last season you can only send a player up and down five times during an option year. Last year any movement in the month of April didn't count towards those five though, I'm not sure if that's still the case this season.
