The one thing this does accomplish that I like is that it rewards a team for winning the division vs getting in as a wild card. A 3 game series would do the same thing but it would "ice" the division winners for too long.

Yeah because it makes perfect sense to send a team that just a week ago that was battling for it's division to a one game series against a team it had a six game lead on.
