The 2020 NCAA tournament cancellation has completely ruined the Dayton Flyers

In March 2020, the Dayton Flyers, led by NPOY Obi Toppin, were 29-2 and poised for a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for a program of their caliber. SportsLine even had them as their projected champion. A program-boosting run to the Final Four seemed probable at worst. Such a run could've helped them join a major conference or become the Gonzaga of the Atlantic 10. Then COVID struck and the season got cancelled.

Since then, the program has fallen into complete ruin and any momentum gained from that season is shot. This year's team is the most disappointing. They returned basically everyone from last year that beat eventual national champion Kansas in the regular season and were ranked in both major polls. The reality? They're 5-5 with several bad losses and both their starting guards are out for an extended period of time. DaRon Holmes, who was supposed to be "Obi 2.0," doesn't even look like an NBA draft pick. It's bad enough that they're not living up to preseason expectations, but taking into account that this team was supposed to make up for what was lost in 2020, I'd go as far as to say that this year's Dayton team is the most disappointing in sports history. It feels like all their preseason ranking and them being considered a Final Four darkhorse/DaRon Holmes being considered a NPOY contender were just wishful thinking by people in hopes that they could make up for what was lost in 2020.

Before 2020, Dayton fans were just happy to have a team to root for. After having that once-in-a-lifetime season ripped away from them, their fans want that again and now. If they don't get back to that level soon (which is virtually impossible for them to achieve in 50 years, let alone 5), their fans will start to get impatient. Their support will start dwindling and the cash flow will get slower and slower. I wouldn't be surprised if they went the UAB football route down the line.

Dude, the shutdowns saved millions of lives and you are really worried about the death of a mid major basketball program?

I don't disagree with your point about the shutdowns at all. It's just exceptionally unfortunate what has happened to their program, especially since they're the lifeblood of the city.

They would be in the same position even if they made a run in the tournament lol. This is so stupid.

Yea living in Wichita and seeing what the shockers final 4 run and the season they were a 1 seed did for the university I can attest it definitely fricked Dayton. I wasn’t here when it happened but according to a lot of people the campus now compared to before that run is night and day different due to all the attention it got at that time.

little violin

Murray hoops just lost the coach and 4 players to LSU including two LSU starters.
and then they moved to Missouri valley.

Dayton will get over it.
its better than getting dumped by the 15 seed from nj, I promise. they would not be guaranteed the title. this way they can dream. irl they were likely to lose along the way.

I agree, but just making it to the Final Four could've changed them forever. Instead, the UAB football route isn't out of the question.

I was being a little facetious tbh.

It is an interesting story/tidbit that I had never given any thought.

This also happened to the basketball team featured on Last Chance U.

The virus/shutdowns def did alter the course of history in many ways.

San Diego State had a similar season with Flynn at point guard. They seem to be doing just fine still, though.

What? Dayton has a proud hoops history. 2020 wasn’t their only great year. Hell, they were in an Elite 8 just 6 years before. They might be in a rut right now, but this is not some end of the world type season.

yea this was probably worse since they were already deep in the winner's bracket, needing 1 win for the finals.
They were playing some of the best baseball in the tournament that year. Imagine being that close to a championship & told you have to go home.

1984 NCAA Tournament LSU could not stop Roosevelt Chapman.
That was a talented Tiger team.
1984 NCAA basketball arguably had the most talent of any year.
What a year for basketball that was.

What’s weird is I was thinking about this last night around 10 pm and this thread was made an hour later.

The 2020 Dayton Flyers are the 1994 Montreal Expos

There was a YouTube video of a guy in Dayton pissed about canceling the postseason and driving around different hospitals freaking out over how if it’s such a bad pandemic why are the hospitals empty.

from memory:
Dayton got to final four with Johnny Flynn in the mid 1960s against Ucla/Wooden/Lew Alcindor/Lucius Allen.

forever? ill tell you this, the fans made the trip to Chicago to play DePaul in the 70s. I had season tickets. Dayton and Cincinnati were the best fans.
