But if you don’t live in a house or apartment within that particular schools zone, you shouldn’t be able to participate in a UIL sport for that school. They should take a hard line on all transfers also.
meh you can’t be denying kids opportunities just because adults get butthurt. Lots of kids take advantage of open enrollments who don’t play sports

The UIL doesn’t have to get rid of open enrollment. Some districts do it so kids can go be part of academic or fine arts programs.

This is how things are manipulated in my neck of the woods. Each of the 6 high schools has a special program. One is an International Baccalaureate school, one has the Ag program, another has Health Science Academy, one partners with a community college to do various things (fire safety, mechanical work, etc).

There are some star athletes around here that will utilize those programs to enroll at the school of their choice. That’s if they don’t use a relative’s address.

The only thing I do not like about Texas football is the pay to play issue

There are districts, I.e. Katy that basically tell you to join the booster club to even get a chance to be on the team.

I like like booster clubs but to use it as a way to field your team is not the true spirit of it. I believe Carrol and many others do that. I believe teams like Ellison have no shot because of this.

Which is exactly what I said. Let kids participate in whatever academic program they want. But if they want to play sports, they should do it where they live.

There is also an argument that open enrollment is illegal, as those people aren’t paying taxes to that district. That’s how a lawsuit will ultimately end it.

You should check out cheerleading. It’s a joke how much it costs and how they send you a bill without blinking.

open enrollment

The Max Preps Top 10 for Louisiana was 100% open enrollment/Select schools. Yet we act like the split actually leveled the playing field. It’s a joke. Might as well go back to 5 classes and be done with it.

they are paying taxes to the district, just not to a specific HS

Not necessarily.

For schools like Westlake, Duncanville and many others, they don’t live in the district at all. Some may live over an hour away. They are paying taxes to their school district, but not the one they are playing in.

ISD aren’t supposed to get taxes. So open enrollment isn’t issue. But we all know cities have taxes for ISD.

The issue with open enrollment is that you’re supposed to prove there’s a hardship or reason to go to new district

you would think parents of kids in the district would be pissed that out of district kids are in their schools and taking spots on the football team, enough to stop it

Those kids aren’t on the team because they’re not paying the fee to play.

300 for Freshmen who won’t even get a shot at varsity. Then depending on what the booster club adds for uniforms etc The first payment is just to say you’re on the team.

Then the fee goes up yearly

Nope they do not usually. That’s why Katy SLC etc always have things they have parents willing to pay it.

I’m pretty tuned into HSFB in the Dallas area, and I have no idea what fees you are talking about. Maybe it’s different in Katy.

I live in Rockwall, and was actually booster club president for a couple of years. Rockwall overall is a wealthy area. The booster club fee to join was $50. And I promise most parents didn’t join. Most of the funds for football came from the program ad sales, which the players themselves went out and sold. Rockwall was a state semifinalist last year.

At Rockwall-Heath (Heath has more millionaires per-capita than Southlake or Westlake), they barely even have a booster club. They were state quarterfinalist this year.

Now, you do have to pay about $200 for the summer workout program, since it’s run by and outside group. But they absolutely offer discounts/no cost to some families.

Duncanville absolutely isn’t charging kids to play. The will just allow any kid to attend, no matter where in DFW they live.

Go look at Katy ABC and others. Dallas area does it different than everywhere else

Permian is what a club should do as sounds like what yours did
