Why does Texas have two divisions for each classification again?

re: Texas HS Football - 5A/6A State Championships
It’s based on enrollment figures. In 5A, D1 was sorted from D2 preseason to make sure larger schools were in higher division.

In 6A, the top 4 teams from each district make the playoffs. The 2 largest teams that qualify from each district go D1. Its to level the playing field a bit so a 6A of 2300 students doesn’t have to play a 6A like Allen HS of 6000 students.

And if I recall, it’s strictly based on statistics. So it is definitely to be taken with a grain of salt.

right.. its just based on scores, records, etc..

There is no human element setting the line.. it was 50/50 the last few weeks on outright winners, much less spreads

Why not just split the divisions entirely?

That’s what they’re working toward. They’ve already split them preseason for each classification up to 6A. That’s the only class where they split once playoff teams are determined.

Right. 1A-5A divisions are separate classifications. They are set every two years during reclassification, which is probably what you meant.

Just to confuse people more though, only football has Div 1 & Div 2.

For 1A-5A, they have different districts for all other sports, and only one playoff for each classification (including 6A).

That’s insane to me.. 1500 people in your high school class... there’s hundreds of people at graduation you had never met before

I think they have something like 1000+ kids in their football program grades 9-12

There was a little over 1300 in my DFW suburb class. There was a freshman team, a JV, and a Varsity team for football and each team had about 150 kinds on it. This was years ago before 6A was even a thing but we were a big 5A school at the time so I’m sure the numbers are even higher now.

I graduated 17 years ago in a class of about 700 and that was considered big.

That is absurd. I went to a public high school and my graduating class had 84 kids.

We’re you a Plano school? That’s the only ones I could imagine having 5000+ kids back then.

That’s one reason why Frisco has the opposite philosophy. They opted to build a series of smaller schools as their district grew. I think they are at 10 high schools now, with more on the way. Their goal is to cap attendance at 2,000 students for each school.

McKinney is another neighboring school district. The district is the same size as Allen, but they have 3 high schools.
