The reluctance to draft and develop a QB from this franchise is infuriating as a fan.

These are the QBs they have drafted under Rick Smith since the 2007 draft

08- Alex Brink (7th round)
11- TJ Yates (5th round)
14 - Tom Savage (4th)

Three QBs in 10 drafts, none before the fourth round. Absurd

I would be thrilled to see them go after a QB in the first or second round this year. I feel like they almost have to. It's the position with the most glaring need and it has never truly been addressed in the history of the franchise outside of getting lucky with career backup Schaub being good for a few years.

I disagree unless you're getting a proven top 10 QB. And those types of elite player for elite player trades almost never happen in the NFL.

I remember this guy named Joe Montana . . . and there was another guy named Peyton Manning . . . and it seems like a guy named Brett Farve . . . .

Not a ton of guys out there like that right now, but, not accounting for current contract status, Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Tony Romo come to mind.

Brees and Romo could retire at any point. Romo is probably one hit away. Watt is 27 years old and was the best defensive player in the NFL when healthy

Would not trade Watt for any of those guys. The idea of trading the most dominant defensive player in the game at the prime age of his career for someone you would get a few years out of is not worth it.

Is a Super Bowl worth it?

JJ Watt isn't getting a team to a Super Bowl by himself. A great QB could even without Watt.

And even if they don't reach the SB with that QB, the Texans are in the exact same spot they were in this season. Great defense sans Watt and looking for a QB.

There really isn't anything to lose.

False dichotomy

Where do you find one of those?

Betting JJ Watt on the resurgence of a QB in his twilight is absurd. There is no Peyton or Joe Montana available.

No, my point is with a good QB a Super Bowl is possible. Without one, it's not possible. That QB gives the team a real shot.

And really, it doesn't even have to be a QB. They can trade him for picks and upgrade the team.

I think the addition of Watt makes the defense only slightly better as they are already very good.

The team could better use his salary in other places.

Didn't they basically do this and end up with Osweiler? Losers never learn.

If I was Texans GM, wait until TTaylor gets cut by the Bills and give him a shot next season.

with the massive Osweiller deal.
And them being stuck with him til 2018.

Can the Texans even afford to go out and pay another QB money to convince them to come to Houston?

Probably not without a lot of cuts and restructuring that would be counter productive. Which is why they need to be looking in the draft, what they should have been doing all along.

Did the Texans learn nothing already going after a backup with a small sample size?

Do you realize good starters aren't available? I mean I'm certain even Rick Smith would take Rodgers or Brady over Osweiler. You either have to draft a guy or sign a back up, both options are throwing darts at a board.

Montana was literally out for 2 years and his replacement won the freaking league MVP, that's why he was available.

Manning was out for a full season, the Colts then had the #1 pick AND one of the best prospects since P Manning was available. If they had the 4th pick that year or say there was no elite QB like the year the Texans took Clowney then Manning would have been back with the Colts.

Those are called exceptions and there isn't one remotely close to that this offseason. The best likely available Romo, I'm sure there will be multiple teams interested so it will be up to Romo and Dallas where he goes.

Out side of the 14 draft when they passed on Bridgewater and Carr, who have they really passed on that would be making a difference now? They've had the #1 pick 3 times and all 3 years the best player available was a DE and the top QBs were busts(jury still out on Bortles I guess). To move up would cost way too much in draft picks with no guarantee to be any better than signing back ups. The Osweiler deal only cost money and doesn't hurt the cap if they cut him next year.

Id rather Cousins but dont think the Texans have enough cap-space to sign another and replace or re-sign defensive players

Id like that Defense with a healthy Watt and Joseph
Draft some LB's and O linemen , maybe a 3rd 4th round RB
and take a chance Savage can stay healthy

Fair enough. You know those off the top of your head because they all have done well. That's 20/20 hindsight. Osweiler and Weeden went ahead of Wilson and Cousins in that same draft. Dalton was the 35th pick, they could have traded up for him or the 36th pick Kaepernick I suppose.
