The only explanation I have is the USC hype machine. He's a huge safety, runs really fast, yadda yadda yadda....but yet can't play the game very well outside of making a couple big hits.

He had ZERO interceptions this year, just 59 tackles and 8 passes defended (no forced fumbles, no sacks).

How in the world is that an AA type year?

Compare that to a guy like Rashad Johnson who had 82 tackles, 1 sack, 5 interceptions (2 returned for TDs), 11 passes defended and a forced fumble.

Or about 50 other safeties who also had a better year.

Pretty sickening name alone gets you AA these days.

Kevin Ellison>Taylor Mays

Mays had a pretty good year considering he was playing the wrong position the whole year. The reason he got on was because the SC pass defense as a whole was so good, even though numbers wise he shouldn't even be close

SFP dont you agree w/ me that Matt Jones > Tim Tebow. SURELY you,an expert in talent evaluation, will concur with me on this.

matt Jones was faster, that's it.

He was also dumber (football wise), weaker arm, less accurate arm, and couldn't read a blitz to save his life.

I thought about that, except despite stats, most intelligent people agreed that Dorsey was a better player than Ellis.

Ellis? Dorsey and Ellis were not the only two defensive linemen last year. This is about Mays.

I can agree to disagree with 1st AA selections.

However, to say he doesn't know how to play the game is just foolish.

Mays plays 25 yards off the line of scrimmage. The longest pass completed on USC since he's been roaming back there is 39 yards to a TE covered by a LBer in 2006 vs. Nebraska and a 39 yarder to a RB this year. There was a 41yd TD in the Rose Bowl last year with a minute left a Mays on the sideline.

The USC defense has given up 3 Passing TDs all season (one off of a deflected ball, one on an underneat pass inside the 8, and one on a trick play). The only one against Mays was the trick play by ucla. The other two were away from him.

He doesn't have the great stats, because no one will test him. Cal tried this year and Mays hurt three of their receivers. The dude is 6'4", 238, ran a 4.28, had a 41" vertical and did 225lbs 31 times on the bench at USC's Pro Day last year.

His job is to roam the secondary and make plays. He did that, and no one did a damn thing this year.

Yeah, they should have played him closer to the LOS after the first Q

So someone who doesn't get tested is better than someone that does and and produces big plays? Got it.

He had some great line backers making the tackles before the backs got into the secondary. Watching about 3 or 4 of their games, it looked like he was playing more as a lurker. He is the best safety in college this year and I hope the Saints get him.

I am speaking to his football ability, not his accolades.

The initial poster said he was overrated.

While I agree that he is the best combination of size/skill, AA is about college production - not potential.
