Kobe quit in game 7 of the Suns series. LeBron is the GOAT game 7 player.

Miss me with "mentally soft"

Kobe's 04 Finals was arse. Oh and he was atrocious against Dallas in 2011 as well when he was guarded by Kidd and JJ Barea lol. He got SWEPT.

ETA - Kobe's stat line in the 2011 sweep - in games 3 and 4 he only scored 17 pts in each must win game. My point is these things happen to everyone not named Jordan.

People forget things like this. Game 6 of the 08 Finals was on last weekend. It was an elimination game for the Lakers and Kobe shot 7-22, scored only 11 points after the first quarter and the Lakers got eliminated in a 39 point loss.

The 2006 Suns elimination game was terrible. The Lakers lost by 31 and Kobe took 1 shot (which he missed) in the second half. It was one of the most obvious times a player quit on his team.

Kobe was a fantastic player. Those games don't change the fact he's one of the greatest players in NBA history.

The anti-LeBron crowd tends to love ignoring that every player has those games. In 1989, Michael Jordan only took 8 shots in a Game 5 loss that gave the Pistons a decisive series edge. In Game 4, Jordan shot 5-15 in another loss. MJ's two subpar games turned a 2-1 Bulls series lead into a 3-2 Pistons lead.

Even the greatest players have moments of failure. Some people on here just have selective memory for it.

OMG HE QUIT ONE TIME! IN A FIRST ROUND SERIES! HOW WILL I EVER RECOVER FROM THE FACT THAT KOBE QUIT ONE TIME IN AN ILLUSTRIOUS 20 YEAR CAREER WHERE HE WON 5 RINGS? LOL Magic Johnson's one of the great leaders and winners too and he choked once, don't make a difference

Those examples don't count.

Kobe was the Black Mamba. He didn't flinch in that one gif.

Was not a Kobe fan until after his playing days, I think he really found himself as he matured later in life. I attribute fatherhood to a lot of that. But he is easily a top 10 All-time player.

In a series deciding game there was nobody better than Larry Bird.

He was rightfully criticized for this, coming off the heels of a controversial season where his rift with Shaq was irreparable and he tried to do too much. Wasn't the meltdown like LeBron in 2010 AND 2011 but he used this and the hate he received for pushing Shaq out to submit the greatest numbers of his career when Phil returned and lead the Lake Show to 3 straight Finals appearances and win the MVP. Maybe the best thing that ever happened to his career and contributed to the maturity of the Black Mamba.

Also want to point this out: unlike LeBron, Kobe was never perceived or declared a true contender for MJ's throne from the moment he started gaining notoriety in high school. Yes, there were comparisons due his size and flashy style of play but Kobe wasn't even drafted in the top 10 and certainly wasn't placed in the fire as he began his pro career. He sought to emulate MJ and I can declare this with utmost confidence: Kobe Bryant is the player that most resembles MJ since MJ's career. He didn't surpass him and that likely wasn't the expectation for him entering the league but, by trying, he became an all-time legend. Point of all this is different expectations, from the moment LeBron began declaring himself "King" and got unanimously regarded as the greatest high school player of all-time, he carries that level of expectation. If he's as great as people say he is, he doesn't melt down the amount of times he did in the high stakes. With great talent comes great responsibility. LeBron was THE ONE to overtake Jordan and, unless he goes on a legendary fourpeat title run with the Lakers to end his career, he won't. It's as simple as that.

I mean when you got 5 rings by your 15th season, you're a made man and bona fide legend at this point, you get a pass. LeBron's been playing 17 years and still searching for title #4.

Yeah I think Sam Smith's Jordan Rules book points out the Pistons had like 3-4 players (all elite defenders considering this was the Bad Boy Pistons and Dumars is an all-time on-ball defender) hounding Jordan every time he got the ball this game with the express purpose of making him get rid of it. The Jordan Rules defense began this particular series.

Surprised they didn't use the defensive strategy of letting Jordan score at will so he'll eventually tire out.

You're right, and I wish your take had the same reasoning in the post just above it.

You say LeBron shouldn't fail or melt down if he truly is as great as he is. But you ignore times Kobe or MJ had stinkers in similar moments.

Heck, in the 96 Finals, MJ played poorly. If he'd faced Dirk's Mavs and not Kemp's Sonics, his performance wasn't far off from LeBron in 2011.

It happens to everyone, but LeBron is the only one you won't give a pass to.

You’re too stupid to understand that those Pistons teams couldn’t play at the same pace the Durant Warriors could. That says everything about how ignorant you are.
