I'm curious as to what has caused the breakup of more families, gambling or smoking weed.

Yeah I know they'll try and they're using that BS label, I just don't see why a state would capitulate.

Probably the power of lobbying and maybe even promotion of a specific gambling entity, I have rudimentary knowledge of how these sports betting situations work relative to sports leagues and governments so that's my common sense/logical theory. These sports league have billions of dollars and resources of that nature, it's scary how powerful and persuasive they are within a context that influences their respective leagues.

Checks a big box off the anti-betting argument for Louisiana .

Too many powerful people have too much at stake to allow sports betting to be legalized in Louisiana. It will eventually happen, but it will not be fast. Few people are going to take the time to drive over to MS to place bets when they can just call up/log into the account of “their guy” from their living room.

The NBA and Major League Baseball have been asking states to give them 1 percent of the total amount wagered on their games.

And if states like WV and MS won’t? Not like any of the leagues have teams in those states. And they cannot pull television rights. The sponsors would go nuts. Leagues want their cut, but they fought this for years and years. If they had worked with the states to get this done they would have had a lot more leverage. They have no leverage now.

Wish they would allow college football DFS again. It was amazing.

Some online shop, like DraftKings, will set up a sportsbook, give the leagues a cut and become the official sportsbook of MLB/NBA/NFL. It makes sense. They could get ads during the games and they are just kicking back a share of the take.

This is a good thing. The leagues are questionably refereed now anyway. Maybe this will cause greater scrutiny to have the leagues play as fair on the field as possible.

'm guessing it's basically an extortion fee so they don't face some BS lawsuits about profiting off of the leagues' product.

I understand there are frivolous lawsuits all the time. I also understand that courts interpret the law and juries makes rulings in ways that make absolutely no sense to me at times.

But unless the NFL is going to stop putting its games on tv and and start make people that attend games sign something that says they won't bet on games they attend, what possible legal standing could they have for a lawsuit here against people profiting from their product that they willingly and openly place in the public forum?

They don't have any legal standing, hence why Vegas did what Vegas did for the past 50 years with IIRC ZERO legal consequences from these leagues. If we want to play mental gymnastics here, maybe a copyright/IP claim since the post you responded to raised these entities "profiting off of the league's product" as a possible source of issue, it sounds logical at least from my perspective but is a reach would probably be 12b6'd out of court.
