Probowls/All-star game appearances. They are too subjective and most of the time are done on reputation alone.

Hall of FAME

Would hat not be an appropriate category? I'm not suggesting it as a "major" factor, but it seems relevant.

Look no further than Mr. Marcus Allen. How in the frick did that dude make 6 Pro Bowls is beyond me.

Take 1986 for example. He makes the Pro Bowl by rushing for 759 yards, (3.6 YPC), and just 5 TDs. George Rogers doesn't make the Pro Bowl that year despite rushing for over 1200 yards, (4.0 YPC), and leading the NFL with 18 rushing TDs

4 times he made the Pro Bowl as a RB while rushing for less than 800 yards, with 3 of those times averaging less than 3.9 YPC

Thats just horrible

I agree with you in general, but it's about the only stat for O-linemen other than games started. I think it's a pretty good measure for them because the average fan really isn't the one who selects the O-line.

What about the NBA MVP award?

I think things like career scoring, or Career FG%, Rebounds and such hold more water than the MVP award. At least nowadays it does.

The NBA and MLB All Star fan voting is a joke. Nothing but a popularity contest. It should be 50% fan vote, 50% coaches/players voting.

Pro Bowls, especially for offensive linemen. Jonathan Ogden, Orlando Pace, and Willie Roaf could have given up 30 sacks each, and they would have still been Pro Bowlers. The Vikings could have had the 30th best offense in the NFL and Randal McDaniel was still getting in.

Those guys above were great, but they just phone it in when they vote for offensive linemen.

Same thing for fullback. Mike Alstott made like 9 Pro Bowls at fullback, and he never really played the position. Same for LeRon McClain. They should just change the fullback spot to a "250 pound halfback" spot.

i think it all should be weighed in.
public opinion matters, and if enough people respect a player to say that he's an all star/mvp, then it's people essentially saying that he was one of the best at what he does.

whether or not that's accurate or not, it should reflect positively on the player.

where it shouldn't come into debate is discussing the merits of one player vs another.

Marcus was a gamer. He had a nose for the endzone even when he didn't rack up a lot of stats. Fans love touchdowns and clutch plays and so apparently does the Hall.

Doesn't every team have a "leading rusher"?

Maybe the Saints hall of fame, but 6000 rushing yards won't get you into the NFL hall. His stats just aren't high enough to back his way into the hall and he's on the downside of his career. Typical of a lot of running backs.

Roy Williams 5x Pro Bowler

That's close to HoF level yet he is at best the 13th best FS in the league right now.
