Wilson has done plenty of things worthy of a suspension. This was not one of them.

I agree. But he does have a reputation for late/dirty hits so he will likely draw extra scrutiny. I simultaneously do not blame Marchy for thinking it might warrant further scrutiny. Either way Wilson will be watched much more closely by the refs in the remaining games.

I want to be mad about the Reaves goal, which was an egregious crosscheck, but... that still leaves four other goals the Caps let up (not counting an empty netter). Hell, the Caps had a wide open net with 10 seconds net and simply flubbed the shot. No excuses. They lost the game by getting outplayed. any time they took the lead, they gave up the game tying goal on the next shot. Play better defense.

As for the Wilson hit, first off... it was interference. And he got a penalty for it. But blowing it up into anything else is silly. He made a shoulder to shoulder hit, not from behind, didn't hit the head, nor left the ice. Yes, the guy didn't have the puck, but play was ongoing and he had the puck a second ago. It was interference, and rightly called as such.

But the Knights high sticked Orlov in the face, scored on a cross check, and slashed Oshie's ankles in an attempt to injure when the puck was nowhere near him. None of those major stick fouls were whistled by the refs. so excuse Wilson for hitting Vegas' best skater. That's what you're supposed to do when one team is committing repeated stick fouls without the refs paying any attention. I don't blame Vegas for that, I blame the refs, who were f'n atrocious. But they set the standards that it was free reign to try and injure Washington's skill players, so wilson rightly thought he was allowed to do the same. And he at least hit a guy in the run of play and didn't use his stick or try and injure the guy (and we know what a Wilson hit with intent looks like... this wasn't it). This was the hockey equivalent of leveling the quarterback after he throws a pick and turns into a tackler.

The Caps lost because they played like arse. But it was an exciting game and fun to watch if it wasn't your team. Both teams will likely play better going forward.

Afterward, Wilson saw no problem with the play.

"There are going to be hits," Wilson said. "It's a contact sport. That's all that I saw."

"He'd probably say he shouldn't admire his pass. I'm just finishing my check. I haven't slowed it down. I've been told that we're talking tenths [of a second] here. I think it's game speed, and I delivered it in good time. I think he let up a little bit because he wasn't aware I was there. I finished him through his body. He might have been a little bit surprised by it, but it wasn't an aggressive hit. He looked fine at the end when he was yelling at me from the bench."

Marchessault should spend less time admiring his passes and more time being aware of his surroundings. It’s the playoffs.

Yes sir!

I didn't think the Caps played all that well last night, which scares me a bit. But if there is anything I've learned this season, it's to not put anything past VGK. LFG!!

He had plenty of time to let up on the hit after the pass was played. JM lacking awareness made it look worse than it was, but that hit did not have any impact on the play itself.
As someone said earlier, it's like hitting a quarter back long after the ball is out of his hands. Preventable and unnecessary.

No hearing.

The thing is, Wilson clearly DID lay up on the hit. Wilson could have destroyed Messerechault and didn't. He even altered his skating path to hit him from the side instead of from behind. 10 years ago, that's not even a penalty, that's a guy getting lit for standing and watching. Now, it's two minutes for interference.

But trying to turn it into a suspendable hit was a gross overreach. Wilson made a late hit, and he got a penalty for it. But it had far less impact on the game than the Reaves cross check that did not receive a penalty.

I don't think that Wilson deserved to be suspended either and I'm glad that he isn't. Especially in the Finals, you want everyone on deck so that there's no excuses.

That said, if VGK go on to win the Cup, you'll still have tons of haters crying about how rigged it was...which makes it that much sweeter.

This series does have me in a bit of a quandary, though. I've always liked Ovi and Oshie and if the Caps were playing literally anyone else, I'd be massively pulling for them. Oshie had a splendid game last night and Ovi has yet to put his stamp on this series...so I don't think for a moment that the Caps are gonna go away quietly. Everyone wrote then off after they dropped the first 2 at home to Columbus and we saw what happened.

The Reaves hit had a bigger impact on the game, but here's the thing... the Caps lost because they played like utter dog excrement in their defensive end. There's no conspiracy other than John Carlson forgetting how to play defense. He was atrocious. I'm angrier at him than the officials.

Both teams left a lot to be desired when it came to defense in front of the net. That's been one of the few pet peeves that I've had with VGK this season.

Holtby and Fleury both had interesting games as well. At times brilliant and others far below what they've shown this post season.

I think this is pretty accurate. I can't help but believe holtby+fleury will lead to much more settled games in general the rest of the series. 10 goals is highly doubtful to be the norm for the series. the only goal I somewhat fault a keeper for is Fleury with the own goal, the rest were pretty much excellent goals no one should fault a keeper for. Defensive efforts need to be better both ways. That and Refs need to tighten up a bit, but otherwise this is going to be a great 5 game series for the knights

I didn't think he would/should get a suspension, it was a late hit, but not egregiously so and it was otherwise a rather controlled check. That penalty was probably the only good call the refs made that night lmao.

I hope the refs tighten up, don't want to hear that refs are rigging games when vegas wins the cup.

If VGK win the Cup, you'll hear that it was rigged, no matter whom they blame.
