This really isn’t difficult
Sports was seen as an escape for people. Something where people of different opinions and backgrounds could come together. And during the major world wars, the anthem started being sung before sporting events because to people it brought pride in what America was all about

Exactly. Idiots in here making comparisons to their own work. The anthem celebrates the gathering of people for sports. It’s not a qualifier that NBA athletes are super duper important. They are regular folks with jobs too. If 20,000 people want to watch you perform a tooth extraction, then play the anthem. Who cares.
What I don’t understand is why people are so mad that others prefer it be played. “Hurr durr...it’s a dUmB tRaDItiOn!”
Newsflash, lots of traditions currently exist solely because they are just that, traditions. They don’t all necessarily serve the same level of importance they used to.
