Man, I gotta say I never realized how intensely nationalistic people are. Like, this is such a strange thing to get upset over. Something that really doesn’t serve much purpose, playing the national anthem before sporting events?

And then getting so upset about one dudes take on it.

I’m really flabbergasted at a lot of these posts by people in a community I thought I identified with for so long

The logical option is this, just remove the Anthem entirely.

But to a liberal that would be some awesome virtue signaling cool points.

he's not wrong that there is a double standard.
How is there a double standard? The NBA and other major leagues, themselves, created the custom. Along with declaring itself the National Basketball Association.

This morning we had a meeting in the conference room. I politely demanded that we sing the national anthem before we began and everyone in the room, revealing themselves to be communists, looked at me funny!

In my house we sing the national anthem before everything. We sometimes sing the national anthem before we sing the national anthem.

Honestly I have had this take since Kap initially kneeled 5 years ago.

The national anthem is not needed at every random sporting event ever. It simply is not. I watch sports for the sports. I do not need to be reminded to be patriotic. I can do that on my own time.

Let the players warm up, play whatever pregame hype music, announce the starters, and boom, let's start the game.

People used to be proud to be Americans. It’s a shame we are conditioning ourselves to look upon it with disdain all the time.

Baseball started it during WW1.

And being the National Basketball Association has nothing to do with the national anthem. It was just another name they came up with when the Basketball Association of America combined with the National Basketball League. None of those are directly linked to the National Anthem.

He’s totally right, though. Especially with the NBA being such an international sport, the anthem thing before games is played out. There are many other situations where it’s more important, like government events and whatnot.

While I don't disagree , this is just being intellectually dishonest. There would be none of the issues that the National Anthem is experiencing if the BNA was played in its place.

It's cool to be a proud american. It is. But do we have to be a proud american when we just wanna watch some freaking sports.

It's pointless to search for a "good reason" that things are done at a silly sporting event.

The national anthem is played because people like for it to be played, for whatever reason. Society may be going through a shift and may someday not want it, and that's fine, but it's useless to look for a deeper reason. Might as well ask what "good reason" Take Me Out to the Ballgame or the chicken dance are played.

At least those just fill dead time during commercial breaks.

It takes maybe a minute out of your day and is a communal moment. The only reason we’re seeing this push is bc it’s cool to shite on the USA. It’s petty really

I don't love the kneeling and virtue signaling. But, if you cry about that stuff, this is the end result.

The best solution has always been to play the anthem while the players are in the locker room like they do in college football.

Take away their platform to shite on every person who has ever served this country.

An Alabama politician is trying to make it a state law requiring it be played before every high school sporting event because he never heard it at his granddaughter's volleyball game.

When do you think the anthem is played? It’s during dead time between warm ups and tip

It actually delays the start because the players and refs are ready to get started.
