re: Stan Van Gundy - “What good reason is there to play the anthem before a game?”

Yep this is the most ironic part. Most of these people talk shite about liberal virtue signaling but they are doing it right now.
IDK. When I hear a great rendition of the anthem, I do get goose bumps, but most of the time I am more excited about the event than any part of pre-game. I don't see it as virtual signaling though. I just don't see it as or agree that it is something that is/should be viewed as a negative. It seems to be lumped into this "nationalist" nonsense. Its the national anthem. I don't see a good reason why it shouldn't be played.

or bc black people matter so much, you are taking away from local black artists having an opportunity to show case their talents.

Why are you supporting a country that RAILROADED an incumbent president who quite obviously WON in a LANDSLIDE?

This pandemic has done far more in reducing opportunities for showcasing talent than a removal of playing the anthem ever could.

He's not wrong asking the question. People are just pissed they don't have a legit answer.
It was a war propaganda effort started during WWII and popularized during the Cold War. The Greatest Generation of Americans didn't grow up hearing the anthem at sporting events or saying the pledge of allegiance in class, and they still saved the effing world.

Reason 9,735 why I quit watching and following the NBA 20+ years ago.

Yes
We saw this coming

So there's your answer. The reason why we play it before sporting events is because it's become a tradition.

So "because we've already been doing it for a while" is the best justification? That is terrible logic.

I mean, it’s been a common thing to do before baseball games since the Civil War. It became a tradition at big games in the 1918 World Series. It became common place at all sporting events around WWII.
Some traditions last a long time BECAUSE they are good.

I think your timeline is off, as it wasn't the national anthem at the time of the Civil War, nor was there professional baseball at that time, but regardless...
So again, "because we've been doing it for a while" is the reason?
What makes it inherently good? That's what SVG is asking that no one has responded to yet.

We only stopped bc a bunch of woke, emotionally weak, SJW millionaires started saying the US is racist for which no good argument has ever been made.

Because it is a beautiful song with intense historical and cultural significance that is pleasing to listen to and serves as a uniting force reminding all in attendance that no matter how bitter the rivalry, that we are all united under a common banner. No matter how deep fan loyalties lie, there is one loyalty that unites everyone in attendance. In that moment, every person in that stadium plays for the same team.
That is not an insignificant reason to continue the tradition. I have yet to hear even a remotely logical reason why it should NOT be played.

We haven't stopped, though.
That also doesn't explain why we started, which was SVG's question.

Do you think he even caught it? I’m guessing he didn’t.
