The referee announced that St. Charles was given their 2nd timeout back due to the penalty. It wasn't a mystery to everyone except the Shaw staff.
Interesting point though if the helmet was removed after the timeout was granted.

St. Charles still had 2 timeouts at that point. Read the OP again

The coach basically said he wasn’t going to use them. It was the flag that changed things.

He said he was thinking about it for a second then decided to use them.
But I will say, looking at that replay, the center does look to the St. Charles sidelines right after the snap. He probably saw they were not signaling timeout right away then threw his helmet. Brutal

So is it true LHSAA rules state once you call a time out you cant get it back? SCC called TO bf the penalty and Shaw would have won it if refs didn’t give SCC their TO they called back after the penalty

I don't think the timeout was called before the penalty. You can see the center look to the St. Charles sidelines. When he sees they aren't immediately calling timeout he throws his helmet.

Shaw kneels it with :32, kid takes helmet off to celebrate and that’s when flag is thrown.
He didn't just take his helmet off, he chunked it into the air. This ain't on the refs.

Oh man! I remember when ABC Sports used to have clips that showed elation vs. devastation and called it “The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat” this game would be the opening clip if that still existed!
Imagine how terrible the kid that missed the PAT felt, then 35 seconds later, how terrible the kid that threw the helmet felt.
When I watched the video I didn’t know it was St. Charles Catholic, I just read St. Charles, but as it played, I did think, man that young kicker had some Devine intervention on his side, then I heard St. Charles Catholic. In 2065 when these seniors are having their 40th reunion, this will still be legendary.
